I had a good experience at Payless. Had a short wait at the counter to get the car I rented. They offered me a small increase to have an upgraded vehicle. So I took the upgrade.

Nice car no issues. Used customer service to extend the return of the car by 4 hrs.was not a problem and was no charge.will use Payless again in the future.

Whenever I come in I always rent from Payless. The rep Nate has never failed me. He is fast and efficient. I had a horrible trip in and he made it painless once I got there. I almost forgot how bad the flight was. Thanks for the great service Nate. Your awesome.

It took almost an hour to pick up the car which was, "upgraded at no additional fee." Come to find out the daily rate whent up by more than 50% do to our cashiers generosity. Just read a few reviews and apparently this scam is built into their business model. Never trust these charlatans!

It appears that I'm another bad review I should have read before renting. The other negative reviews are true. There is zero customer service or communication. Save yourself the time, money, head aches, and go somewhere else. Our filthy car was only the beginning.

AVOID AND BEWARE!!! I made a reservation at Payless Car Rental in Denver through Expedia. I waited 20 minutes to catch the shuttle bus (which was filthy and had broken seats) and then waited another 15 minutes in line at the Payless counter only to be told that in order to rent a car in Denver I needed to present a copy of a utility bill with my name on it! [Who travels with their electric bill??] I was told that I could fax it to them but they would not release a car to me without it. The customer service agent was rude and tactless. I still don't understand WHY they want this information??

After this horrible experience, I had to carry my luggage and walk (in heels!) on the main (and busy!) airport road to Avis car rental next door where they did not have any absurd requirements about my blood type, favorite movie or other obscure requirements! Save yourself the hassle and stay away from Payless Car Rental. Never again will I be suckered by them!

Hi, when booking online I specifically requested no coverage. When asked in person by the sales rep if I wanted coverage, I responded no. However, now that I am home and able to look over my receipt I see that I was charged for this. I am already very upset as it took over 30 minutes for the airport shuttle to pick me up then once I finally got to the counters, there were only two men working and I ended up waiting in line for another 45 minutes. I was very rushed as I was late to where I was heading and was unable to have the time to really review the receipt at the time. Not to mention the 10-15 people impatiently waiting for good reason behind me. When I complained to the business about this, they said they wouldn't take the charges off even though they pretty much tricked and unethically coerced me into them.

FRAUD! Horrible! Payless has a deceptive business practice whereby they trick tired customers into purchasing collision damage waiver insurance that comes out to about a dollar an HOUR for the term of the rental. I clearly said to the agent, "I decline all insurance". The agent circled a series of boxes that each declined various forms of insurance. The deception is that one of the circled initial blocks has the gullible customer agreeing to purchase the wholly unnecessary insurance. My own auto insurance covers these types of damage and yours does too. This garbage works because after waiting far too long for the shuttle and then waiting far too long at the office, normal humans just want to get on their way. I am embarrassed that I fell for this ploy. Bottom line: Pay a few dollars more for a well known established company and save in the long run. Payless stinks as a matter of intentional corporate policy.

Unfortunately one star is the lowest possible rating but this company deserves. They always overcharge no matter if you book through priceline or not. Don't use them unless you want to lose money.

I rented a compact car for use in Phoenix and was given a midsize car instead. This was fine except for the fact that they tried to charge me for the upgrade even though I reserved a compact. The agent I worked with was rude and pushy and I had to wait over fifteen minutes to get assistance when I picked up the car. They also forced me to get the insurance because I only have liability (which they wouldn't accept) and wouldn't allow me to waive the insurance completely and take full responsibility if I got in an accident. That almost doubled my bill. Then, when I went to return the car, there was a ridiculously long line in the return area and I had to wait to get my car checked in for about ten minutes. I wouldn't have minded except I didn't see any employees working or checking the cars in front of me in. Overall, it was a terrible experience. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Pay more and to someone else.

I rented a car this past weekend. It was a great deal - $9 per day for a Hyundai Sonata. My total? $60.47 for 3 days. I think it all started when I told Jennifer that I didn't want insurance. She kept trying to sell me lower levels of insurance, and I rejected them all. I could see her smile getting smaller and smaller until at the end she was ... maybe not frowning, but grimacing. Do they get a bonus for selling insurance.

Finally she punched some numbers in, got a printout and asked me to initial in a bunch of places. I was in a hurry to get out because I had to pick up my daughter in Colorado Springs. So, I just initialed where she told me to.

Turns out one of the initials OKed roadside service plan (RSP) for $3.99/day. When I read the receipt when I got home (yeah, a good time to read it - but then I don't expect to get cheated) it said that initialing for RSP indicates that I also received a separate brochure. Of course, Jennifer didn't give it to me because that would have alerted me to signing up for something I didn't want to.

And then, as another person pointed out, my car was dirty. I think she gave that to me on purpose because she was pissed off at me. I thought about going back and asking for a cleaner one, but I was in a hurry. I did a check to make sure there were no obvious damages and then took off.

About a mile down the road, I noticed that there was a chip in the windshield - center and very low so it was hard to see from the outside. I went back and got an attendant to mark that the chip was there. Such similarity between my story and one of the reviewers below. Seems suspicious.

Oh, and there is the toll use fee. If you use any toll where they have to pay using their electronic box that I didn't even know was there, you get charged $2.95/day plus the toll. I'm guessing they charge you that rate for the duration of the rental even if you only use the toll once.

Mechanically the car was good. I just didn't like the service from Jennifer nor the sneaky way she added $11.97 for the RSP. But that's my fault for not taking a minute to look over everything Jennifer asked me to initial.

We chose Payless in Denver because they had the best rates. This was May of 2012 and I'm still mad! When we arrived at their business on a rainy evening, we were told that the car we had reserved would never make it up the mountain to our destination. No problem, they would give us a good rate on an SUV. It was such a good deal that he assured my husband that his boss wouldn't approve of it. He was told it would cost $45 dollars a day. This was a 4 day rental which we were happy to get for under $200. The salesman told my husband where to sign on the contract and we were on our way, happy to have a good vehicle at a very good price. We tucked away the invoice, never reading the final cost. I didn't look at it until our return trip home. I was shocked when I saw the total rental fee was $580! They had upgraded our vehicle, adding on $45 to the original rental. And they charged us for insurance! He had told the salesman he didn't want the insurance. He NEVER adds insurance to anything he buys, but the places where the salesman told him to initial were the places that granted permission to add the insurance. My husband felt awful that evening because he was recovering from food poisoning. I think the salesman took full advantage of his situation. He initialed where the salesman told him to initial. When I called them after we returned home, they would not refund us any of the money because they had his initials on everything. We drove the SUV for a total of 4 hours that trip. Shame on us for not reading the invoice before we left their facility, we will be smarter the next time. But shame on Payless for taking advantage of a customer who wasn't feeling well.

I took a chance and rented from them the week of March 18th. The prices were the lowest, the service was not any different than any other rental agency and the car was in excellent shape.

We booked our rental through O...

We booked our rental through Orbitz. When we arrived, the guy managed to talk us into a larger car at a "special rate". Well, we took the bait. But he failed to mention what the special rate was and I neglected to look at the contract when I signed. Our daily rental charge went from 58.62 to 94.62 (not counting the various taxes, fees, etc.). This only took us from an Elantra to a Sonata Hybrid. Seems excessive. So, the Orbitz estimated total of $387 became $633. To add insult to injury, he quietly tacked on Roadside Service Plan (2.99/day), which I did not ask for. I accept the fact that it was really my fault for not paying attention (which, I'm sure, Payless counts on!), but is it really worth it to them in the long run to bilk a customer for an extra couple of hundred dollars to lose their business forever and to scare others away with bad reviews? Bad management! I wish I noticed the agent's nametag because he was dressed differently from the other's and may have been a manager. In my contract under "Rental Agent", it says "ARIC".

Complete scam. Wanted to rent ...

Complete scam. Wanted to rent the car for 5 days and the agent quoted me at $405. I said that was way to much, so he came back with it under but still charged me $405. He did all this while smiling and saying "Welcome to Denver"
