Your primary care physician can order and obtain your lab work for you or you may take our lab order to any lab of your choosing. Many patients have the lab work performed at St. Joseph’s outpatient center. Notify our office before you go, so we can send them your information, help make an appointment, and facilitate the process.

I had a severe nasal distortion due to repeated surgeries and radiation therapy. The plastic and reconstructive surgeon who had been treating me in Phoenix felt that I needed expert care and recommended Dr. Menick, so since March my wife and I have been commuting between Phoenix and Tucson several times a month. Anyone who’s driven between the two cities and along Speedway will agree that this is not the most scenic or interesting drive. But it has certainly been worth it.

Frederick J. Menick, MD earned his medical degree from the Yale University Medical School. He then completed his general surgery residency at Stanford University and the University of Arizona, and his plastic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Menick is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and is a past president of the Rhinoplasty Society.
Wound Care
Cosmetic surgery is elective and cosmetic surgery patients are usually healthy. Most procedures are performed as an outpatient. Occasionally, they stay overnight in the hospital to control of pain or nausea, for help in simple daily care, or for observation to prevent or recognize any possible complication. An overnight stay is more likely in the older patient or one undergoing most extensive operations. Some patients just prefer the “tender loving care” provided in a hospital and wish to limit the need for help at home. Few bandages are necessary. Patients need tender loving care, some assistance with simple wound care, the application of ice or lubricating ointment to the eye, and modest help with the needs of everyday living, post-operatively at home or in the hospital. When possible, they can recover with help at home.

Reconstructive Surgery

The skills needed to rebuild the face deformed by cancer, trauma, or birth defects can also be applied to aesthetic surgery”.

Eyelid Surgery
7. Apply a bland lubricating eye ointment at night and bland saline eye drops during the day, if needed, to lessen eye irritation. These are available without prescription from any drugstore. Applying ointment to the whites of your eyes each night and when sleeping prevents irritation. A temporary stitch is often placed to partially close the eyes so they do not open fully for a few days. It is removed one to two days after surgery. Blurry vision is common after eyelid surgery for a few days.

2. Infection – Any time an incision is made, it can become infected. This is uncommon. If the wound does become infected, it may respond to oral antibiotics which you can take at home or occasionally require intravenous antibiotics and admission to the hospital. If an implant is used (breast augmentation or reconstruction, nasal or chin implant, etc.) the implant must usually be removed. Some months later it can usually be replaced. But the operation must be repeated and the final result may be less than expected.
Breast Reduction
6. Skin necrosis – Any time we make an incision, skin that is lifted up has a decreased blood supply, can heal poorly and may occasionally die. This is quite uncommon. It occasionally occurs with surgeries which lift large areas of skin (after a facelift, abdominoplasty, or a breast reduction). This is an unusual circumstance. However, it may be associated with slow healing, more scarring, and may require further unplanned surgery to remove the unhealthy skin, improve the scar, or the final result, if possible. It occurs more commonly in smokers and it is important to stop smoking two weeks before and after surgery. Serious necrosis is unusual but can necessiate additional surgery and limit the final result.
Rhinoplasty
Dr. Menick believes that detailed, honest communication is the cornerstone of his nasal reconstruction, rhinoplasty practice, and cosmetic practice. Information will help you understand the options and help you make an informed choice for or against surgery.
Breast Reconstruction
Most procedures are performed as an outpatient. A forehead flap, rhinoplasty with rib graft, full facelift, abdominoplasty, or autogenous breast reconstruction will require an overnight stay.
Plastic Surgery
Traditional methods of facial repair failed because the primary goal was to get the wound healed rather than restore a normal appearance. Too often after completing reconstruction, the plastic surgeon was satisfied with saying “at least, it looks better than it did before!” and the disappointed patient asked “when do we start the plastic surgery?”

Blepharoplasty
4. Complications are rare, but can occur. A post-operative hematoma — usually appearing as a significant lateral facial and neck swelling, often one-sided and sometimes associated with increasing discomfort — can occur. A hematoma of the eyelid can, on very rare occasions, lead to blindness after lower lid blepharoplasty.

4. Decreased sensation – Local nerves of sensation are injured during surgery. Most often the feeling returns and the numbness diminishes over a few months and is sometimes restored almost to its preoperative condition over a year. There is numbness over the lateral face and neck at the time of a facelift, over the brow after a browlift, over the nose after rhinoplasty, over the lower abdomen after an abdominoplasty, on the breast or the nipple after breast surgery (especially breast reduction), and in the area of any incision.

Dermabrasion
6. It is usually best to keep facial incisions or an area of dermabrasion greasy with ointment. All incisions ooze for the first 24 hours and the ointment softens the crusts and allows them to be easily removed with soap and water several times per day. You can use Bacitracin (available at drugstores without a prescription) for a day or two after surgery if you are not allergic to it. After that, use Aquaphor or plain Vaseline instead. Patients frequently develop allergies to medicated ointments after a few days, so we ask you to switch to Aquaphor or plain Vaseline after 1 to 2 days. You do not need to put ointment on incisions along or in your hair.
Forehead Lift
A facelift (technically known as rhytidectomy) can’t stop the aging process. What it can do is “set back the clock,” improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of the face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping.

Skin Cancer
The Mohs technique of skin cancer excision uses serial sectioning, with 3 – dimensional tracing of the entire tumor, to minimize the risk of cancer recurrence. The lateral and deep margins of the tumor excision are examined to verify that the tumor is completely removed. It is used for “difficult” skin cancers, categorized as those which lie in critical anatomic locations (about the eyes, ears, or nose), for cancers large in size, and for recurrent cancers, aggressive and infiltrating cancer or morphea or sclerosing cancer types.

Time passed quite quickly and my second surgery was scheduled 26 days after the first. This was done as an outpatient and I was overjoyed when the recovery room nurse gave me a mirror. The flap was gone and my nose looked quite normal except for minor swelling. I was careful to follow all directions for my skin care and now 7 weeks after my second surgery I have virtually no scar on my nose and a fading scar on my forehead. I feel very well and have positive comments from all friends and family that followed my progress. It was a real blessing to me that my Mohs surgeon referred me to Dr. Menick.
