We first went to Engine Expert...

We first went to Engine Experts when our 8 year old mini-van with 103k miles on it was on its last legs. The engine was finished, and we were leaning toward buying a new van. We only went to Engine Experts because our mechanic at the time recommended him for engine replacement. After spending about an hour with Jimmy Boyd, we decided to have our mini-van’s engine replaced, and we have never regretted the decision. On that first day, Jimmy gave us an in-depth tour of his shop and explained everything he would do to our van and why. He was upfront about costs and time frames. That same mini-van is now almost 15 years old, and this year we will use it to drop our child off at college. We have another 13 year old Chevy Prizm that we take only to Engine Experts, and when the time comes, we will probably replace its engine as well.

Jimmy has always been honest and straightforward. He is always realistic in how much things will cost, and always takes into account that these are older cars we are trying to hold on to, not cars that we are wanting to pour a lot of money into. That is a rare and refreshing trait in a mechanic. Jimmy is very direct, honest and professional.

Aside from doing great work, they have become sort of ‘family’. They know our names when we go in, and more importantly they refer to our cars by their nicknames, Butch and Sundance. When we take them in for oil changes, we see other customers come and go, and they all seem to have the same relationship with the staff that we do.

I would whole-heartedly recommend Engine Experts. We have been customers for many years, and it’s nice to have a service provider we can completely trust.

If you are thinking about an e...

If you are thinking about an engine replacement, you owe it to yourself to at least talk to Engine Experts. They do know how to do the job right! Their expertise is not limited to just the heavy stuff - they have demonstrated some of the best trouble shooting skills (a lost art at many shops) I have experienced.

On the two year anniversary of the engine replacement that the Engine Experts team performed on my 2003 Dodge Dakota truck, I want to again say thanks!! I have run this truck for the past two years (about 38,000 miles) and have not touched anything other than change the oil. Jimmy and his Engine Experts team told me what they were going to do and what it was going to cost. They delivered exactly what they said they were going to do and it was cost effective solution – especially compared to some options provided by other repair facilities. I was ready to scrap the truck until I talked with Jimmy and the Engine Experts team.

Considering what had occurred prior to me delivering them a truck with much of the engine in the bed of the truck, the experience was a breath of fresh air. I much appreciated the education Jimmy provided on engine replacements and making me comfortable they knew what they were doing – even with the mess I brought them. After talking to Jimmy, I yanked the truck out of a dealership in an “as is” condition and had it delivered to Engine Experts. I had a repaired vehicle in about 10 days that has run flawlessly ever since. Jimmy kept me in the loop as to what they found once they had the truck and what options we had on the install of the engine replacement and their costs – that was appreciated. The opportunity to talk directly to the mechanics was also appreciated since I have messed around with motor vehicles much of my life and like to think I understand some of what is going on.

Thanks again Engine Experts !! I will continue to use your services when possible even though I am not local to the Raleigh area Guess it means you will get my tougher challenges. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family.

Best wishes to the Engine Experts team

I don't write a lot of reviews...

I don't write a lot of reviews, but every now and again you run across a business doing such a good job that you just have to share with others. This story begins with a Camry with 200k miles that finally gave up the ghost after being driven too hard with too little care. The car was otherwise in good shape, but wasn't going to go another foot without a replacement engine. This was not something I approached eagerly, partly because I've had such bad experience with mechanics in the past. I'm not a car expert, but I do know enough to recognize BS when it is being pushed in my direction, and that has been my experience far too often in the past. When you've watched too many clueless kids try to hammer the wrong air filter into place and then try to upsell you windshield wipers because the old ones are "worn out" (less than two weeks after replacing them) you tend to become a little distrustful.

That was the setting when I started looking for someone to replace the engine in my son's car. I came across Engine Experts by doing a web search since none of my friends had a mechanic they were willing to recommend for the job. I was intrigued by the numerous very positive reviews. My first conversation with Jimmy was different than any I've ever had with a mechanic. He apologized first for "talking too much" but explained that you really couldn't understand the way he did things unless you came to the shop for a tour. (You really do need to take the tour) My wife and I went to the shop and were pleasantly surprised by the level of organization and neatness in every direction we looked. Jimmy introduced us to every mechanic and told us a little about what they did, what their expertise was and their certifications. He then introduced us to "little Matt" a Grizzly Adams like man mountain who exudes a customer oriented concern and has actually remembered my name each of the several times I've been in the shop since. Jimmy explained in detail that the way he does things may not be the cheapest way, but that it is the most "frugal" way (and I agree). He explains that when he does this kind of in depth work he is going to be pulling lots of parts off the engine and that some of them may be better replaced while things are disassembled rather than waiting for them to fail later when he'll have to pull it apart again and charge you the labor to replace them. When you look at the parts that he has pulled off and shows you the cracks or other wear, you realize the good common sense involved in fixing them while the engine is already torn down. Not the cheapest way....but in the long run, probably the most sensible and frugal way. You just can't spend much time around Jimmy, Matt, and the other hard working personnel at Engine Experts without beginning to trust their advice because what they say makes sense. I can't tell you how long it has been since I really trusted a mechanic.

To make a long story shorter, the engine was replaced. The final price was higher than I wanted, but fair and completely in line with what I agreed to before the car was delivered. The higher price was due to parts I agreed to replace when I saw how worn they were. No hidden surprises. I am completely confident the car will run for many more miles so long as I do my part and have regular maintenance done. In return for the hard work and patient explanations, the fellows at Engine Experts have earned a loyal customer and I have a "car guy". I now take all four of our family vehicles to Jimmy and I have complete trust that the work will be done appropriately and for a fair price. You can go there with confidence and a little less fear that someone is going to try to rip you off. Good job guys!

Jimmy at Engine Experts has replaced engines in 3 vans and one pickup truck for me. All the work has been completed on time and very professionally, he even took the time to clean each interior and repaint the bumper on one of the vans. I like the work he and his crews do replacing engines so much that we now take our regular maintenance service to him as well. Jimmy is honest and a very good communicator, I recommend him completely without reservation.

First off I want to say that I...

First off I want to say that I am a typical girl when it comes to cars. I really don’t know anything about them. I just know the few basic things I need to do to help maintain a vehicle, like changing the oil, rotating the tires and basic things like that. So when it comes to finding a repair shop that I’m comfortable with it can be a daunting task.

Jimmy and Ed from Engine Experts came highly recommended to me by my brother. I had moved to the area about a year before and was still trying to find a good mechanic. I wish I had asked my brother sooner for a good recommendation. The first time I took my car there they saved me over $700! I have been going to them ever since.

Let me say what happened this past week though. My car died on me last Saturday and I had to get it towed. Knowing that Engine Experts was already closed for the weekend

and that I was in Durham and not the Raleigh area I ended up having my car towed to a local dealership. Boy was that a mistake. They charged me $95 for a diagnostic and then they wanted to charge me over $300 to investigate further. They thought I had to replace the valve cap on my engine and that would have cost me around $2,200 on top of the $300! I wasn’t comfortable with that so I decided to bight the bullet and have my car towed twenty miles to Engine Experts. It took them ONE day to figure out what was wrong and get it fixed AND it cost me less than $700!! The dealership I took it to originally took two days to even get the initial diagnostic done.

I have definitely learned my lesson, and I will never take my car anywhere else. Jimmy is direct, honest and professional.

Engine Experts was recommended...

Engine Experts was recommended to me by another mechanic who has worked on my 1997 Ford Expedition since about 2001. The truck has been excellent and dependable (as was our mechanic) for a LONG time. ..until it "threw a rod." My regular mechanic asked me if I intended to keep the truck or get rid of it. Since it 's paid for and only had 93K miles on it, I decided that I'd get the motor rebuilt or get a new motor. I shopped around first and did my "due diligence" and then, I got a call from Jimmy Boyd at Engine Experts. My mechanic gave me Jimmy's number AND gave Jimmy my number. He invited me to come by and tour the Engine Experts facility, explained the differences btw/ "rebuilt" vs re-manufactured engines, and took a lot of time making sure I understood the process and the costs related. I got the truck back and now it's ready to pull our boat and haul kids again! There are other ":perks" to being an Engine Experts customer. When my son's have a problem with their cars, they can (AND DO) call Jimmy and describe the problem and he'll advise or see them quickly before the "problem" gets to be a REAL PROBLEM. I always appreciate a "straight forward" approach. When we talked about cost, there wasn't any "hemming and hawing" so I had an accurate idea of what the costs were going to be. I "could have" got the rebuilt motor but chose the "new" because of the warranty and I didn't want to have to spend the money twice. I have recommended Engine Experts to others since I've been a customer and I'll continue to do so! These guys are excellent!!!

Jimmy Boyd is your Daddy!

When it comes to engines Jimmy Boyd is your Daddy. Jimmy, his outstanding staff, and new facility are second to none. Jimmy replaced an old POS in my '66 Ford F100 with the original engine and along the way wired, welded, cleaned, painted, chromed, added a dual exhaust, a new tranny, and a bunch of other goodies as well. Jimmy was always up front about the work and the cost and he and his crew did an OUTSTANDING job!

I would recommend Jimmy to anyone without hesitation!!!

Engine? No problem!

I have been a customer of Jimmy Boyd at Engine Experts since 2007. I have a 1998 Ford Explorer that started having major engine issues. My father recommended that I “take it to Jimmy.” He said that the quality and integrity of service that I would get is unmatched. My first meeting with Jimmy was unlike any other first encounter with a mechanic that I have experienced. After introducing himself, he walked me through the shop, explained what they did, introduced me to some of his mechanics, and showed me some of the racecars that they were currently working on. Also displayed prominently in his shop where letters of gratitude from previous clients who raved over his work.

I was impressed immediately with his professionalism and ability to easily explain what he planned to do with my car to replace the engine. He also gave me an estimate of the total cost including other parts that he recommended be replaced with the new engine so that it would run better. He also explained their warranty to replace it if anything should happen to it during the warranty time.

Jimmy and his team replaced my engine, but unfortunately the engine had issues within a few months. When I took my car back to Jimmy, he replaced it – free of charge. He stood by his warranty, and I have not had any issues with the engine to date.

AC? No problem!

I have had an AC issue in my car (it leaked Freon) for at least 10 years. Each summer, I would have to have my car “charged” with Freon, and no mechanic (even those who specialized in AC’s) could fix my car. On the hottest day of the summer last year, my AC totally stopped working, and Jimmy and his team found the leak! This is the first summer I can remember that I have not had to go to an auto shop for an AC issue.

I recommend Jimmy wholeheartedly, and will not take my car to another mechanic. He is honest and has high integrity. If your car ever has any issues… take it to Jimmy @ Engine Experts!

Engine Experts excels in quality service, excellent communication and honest rates.

Jimmy Boyd and his staff of mechanics (all of them are ASE certified) replaced an engine for me in 2003. Jimmy walked me thru the process, showing me how their system works and explaining all the details. He carefully and thoroughly talked thru the pricing but more importantly showed me how regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs in the future. I still have that car today, and Engine Experts has been taking care of all of my automobile issues since then. I've worked with many dealerships and other repair shops in the past but have never received the customer service that I get from Engine Experts. I won't trust my cars with anyone else!

I have owned a business in Raleigh since 1975 and have had a lot of experence in dealing with many local business people. I have found that Jimmy and all the staff at Engine Experts have been the most honest, fair and competent mechanics I have the pleasure of working with.

I had an engine in a 2000 Land Rover that needed replacing in 2005. Now, six years and 110,000 miles later it is still going strong. Finding a mechanic to work on a Land Rover in Raleigh at a fair price was a problem before I went to see Jimmy.

I even recommended my son to have an engine replaced by them last year.

I would highly recommend Engine Experts to anyone withour reservation.

Jimmy at Engine Experts is a one of a kind individual, meticulous, friendly, honest, service oriented. They replaced the engine in our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was our daughters vehicle and she was in school in Boone, NC. We needed the car back in a timely manner. After explaining everything in detail, in person with old parts and hoses in hand, Jimmy and his team replaced our engine quickly.

I have found that you learn the most about an individual when things do not go as planned. After about 2 months the engine light came on and after talking with Jimmy we brought the car in. He diagnosed the problem with the engine and decided it would be better to put another one in. He did this in an extremely timely manner, no fuss, no questions, no charges!!!! Another few months passed and we had a radiator problem. Jimmy fixed the problem, replace a fan clutch, and charged absolutely nothing for his labors, even though this had nothing to do with the engine that was placed. Unbelievable customer service!

I would highly recommend Engine Experts to anybody and everybody.

This man runs his businss with integrity, passion and a true concern to do the right thing for his customer. You will know right from your first meeting with Jimmy that he is different from his competitors. Before you even get a chance to have your work done, he will tour you through his very organized operation. You will meet his engine "Experts", see how his process works, understand how the process works and most importantly have a true understanding of why he is in the elite class of Car Professionals.

He will tell you that he will not do "cheap" work, so if you are looking to have your car put back together with duct tape and glue and hope it will make it a little longer Engine Experts is not the right place for you. Jimmy and his team will do quality work, and sets the expectations right up front what it will cost. He lays it out for you to make a logical decision.

As far as knowledge, they are in the high echelon. His team was able to investigate a major issue with my daughters car and document that it was caused by faulty work done earlier by a national oil change company. Then, with proper documentation and data, the team helped me get reimbursed by the company who had done the work earlier on the car. This is something he did not need to do, and as far as I am concerned was above and beyond the call of duty.

If you are in need of cost effective, truthful and organized work on your vehicle, I highly recommend Jimmy and the team at Engine Experts. And if its your first visit, provide yourself enought time to experience "the tour". But I must advise you, be ready to listen and learn!!!

I own a 1991 Olds Bravada, this car finally gave up the ghost with the odometer showing 228,000 miles, I knew that I had gotten my money’s worth out of it but I was attached to it (you know how it is, a man and his car)

Jimmy Boyd’s Engine Experts was referred to me by the mechanic that diagnosed it DOA. He told me if I was still interested in keeping the car these guys could put an engine in it for a reasonable price.

I went to meet Jimmy and he immediately looked at the car and said the body is in good shape, he and his crew could put an engine in and it would be as good as new. Jimmy gave a tour of his facility (cleanest engine shop I’d ever seen) as he explained the price of the engine and the process he would use once the engine was pulled.

He stated he would call me back to the shop and personally show all of the parts and “we” would make recommendations as to whether or not the part should be replaced. Bottom Line; if parts were replaced, obviously the price would go up based on the actual parts that were replaced. That seemed fair and reasonable to me.

To make a long story short, Jimmy was true to his word. The engine was replaced. He called me back and yes we did replace some other parts but I felt that was the right thing to do. That was 3 almost 4 years ago; I now have 244000 miles on my old car and couldn’t be happier. I have recommended Jimmy to friends and one friend in particular (both he and I worked in corporate for many years) stated, and I agreed, that Jimmy could “teach” lessons in customer service. He goes above and beyond making sure that you (the customer) are satisfied with the work done and his prices are reasonable. He is now my family’s mechanic for all work done to our cars. I would recommend Engine Experts to anyone interested in dealing with a person with Integrity and honor and trust. He absolutely will not perform unnecessary work on your car.

This is a “5” star business!!!!!

Be prepared to pay way more than you expected - I was quoted 3,400 for an engine replacement but ended up with a bill for $4,800 after all the other replacement parts. Then I had to take it back at least half a dozen times for the same little issues (many times for the same issue (squeaky belts, temp light, etc.). Also beware of the "Lifetime"warranty - it only covers the engine - mine failed 2 months after the 18 mo service coverage on the warranty, and they wanted another $1,800 in service to replace it!

The Experts

I have had the honor of doing business with Jimmy Boyd for 7 years. He is honest and dependable while doing the job right the first time. I replaced an engine in my 1997 Expedition seven years ago and sold it in 2008. Ran like a new car until the day I sold it.

Jimmy remains my source for all my automobiles service import and domestic.

I recently had an instance while I was out of town. The Volvo dealer told me I needed a new turbo. I held out and took it over to Jimmy with less than 2 hours notice to the shop. He got me up and running the same day and saved me $1500 because the turbo was fine. It was an oil pressure valve not the turbo.

I can't say enough about the professionlism and quality of the work at Engine Experts. It is so hard to find an honest, reputable mechanic that you can count on. Engine Experts does a fantastic job and I would recommend to my closest friends.

Finally, a mechanic you can trust!

Jimmy Boyd and his crew at Engine Experts are just that, experts. In the past 3 years Jimmy has done everything from replace the engine to tighten a loose fan belt on my 1990 Cherokee. He makes no unnecessary repairs and everything is top-quality work. Jimmy is a stickler for details and goes the extra mile to make sure everything is right. He preaches the "Gospel of Oil Change" and will no doubt show you his auto autopsies (engines that were not properly maintained). I recommend him unequivically. He's the best!
