Whether you are looking for relief from distress, or trying to understand yourself better and create a more meaningful life, therapy can help. My own approach to this is to use the current problem as an opportunity to better understand what is happening unconsciously, and to promote both healing and growth. Because, while anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other psychological problems may be a result of past or current circumstances--they may also be an unconscious effort to find a new, more satisfying way of living for the future. One goal of therapy is to help you understand not just why you are having the problem, but also what you may be trying to work out through the problem. When we live in a way that is unbalanced, or leaves out certain parts of our personality, it can lead to a sense of despair or alienation. Psychotherapy helps to relieve this by providing a safe and reliable setting to get to know all the different parts of ourselves and to integrate them in a harmonious way. I would describe my own style as related, grounding, and creative. The content of therapy is different for everyone who comes. But I believe that for many people there are certain aspects of the process that make it effective: Meeting regularly with a trained professional with whom it feels safe to look at what is and what isn't working for you. Most of us tend toward avoidance, and the structure of therapy helps us to avoid avoidance. Collaborating with someone who is both objective and empathic Using sessions to experience a full range of thought and feeling without critical judgment, in order to become more authentic. Becoming aware of old, reactive and over-protective ways of living that developed into habits, and eventually became unconscious. Learning to live in the present rather than the past Observing how you relate, avoid, think and feel in the moment of the therapy session itself. Developing new and more flexible ways of relating to people and the world Developing a greater capacity to relate to feelings without being overwhelmed by them Building an alliance with inner resources Exploring dreams to see how the unconscious is trying to compensate the conscious position. Developing an attitude toward life based on making meaning out of the difficulties we encounter.
