Dry eyes can occur due to many factors, all of which simplify to the decreased production of tears. This may be due to aging, prior eye surgery, certain medications (antihistamines, psychiatric medicines), eye trauma, or certain auto immune diseases (Sjogren’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus). The symptoms include redness of the eye, excessive tearing, with an irritating burning foreign body sensation feeling.
Emergency Care
If you do have any debris or foreign objects in the eye that you can’t remove or has caused damage, call our office at 316-264-8932. If an office visit isn’t possible, arrangements will be made for Dr. Cohlmia to meet you at a Wichita emergency room or hospital.

Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of permanent vision loss in the U.S. for people over the age of 50. The eye disease typically develops as a person ages, so it’s commonly referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.8 million people have age-related macular degeneration, with another 7.3 million at a substantial risk for developing it*.
Laser Eye Surgery
Corneal disorders can affect anyone who has an eye injury or eye surgery. Cataract Surgery
RLE – Refractive Lens Exchange is one the most innovative methods of correcting vision, including high myopia and hyperopia. It follows the same principles of cataract surgery. Under topical anesthesia, the clear natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial synthetic plastic lens implant. The lens implant is that of a “special fit” and special order for the patient, where its power will be just the correct and appropriate power to clearly focus images onto the retina. In addition, with RLE, patients will never have to worry about cataract surgery in the future.
Eye Exam
Children should receive vision screenings at regular intervals from birth all the way through their teen years. This usually happens during well-child visits with their pediatrician or family physician and at school. If eye problems are detected, a baby or child will be referred to an ophthalmologist to receive a comprehensive eye exam. However, an ophthalmologist can perform a vision screening and/or eye exam at any time.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disorder caused by diabetes. Prolonged high blood sugar can damage the small blood vessels in the retina. It’s a serious complication that can lead to irreversible vision loss. There are two primary stages of retinopathy: the more common earlier stage is called nonproliferative, and the more serious later stage is proliferative.

Reconstructive Surgery
As an oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Cohlmia performs plastic and reconstructive surgery on the areas of the face surrounding the eyes. This includes periorbital and facial tissues such as the eyebrows, eyelids, cheeks, forehead, the tear (lacrimal) system, and the orbital or bony area around the eyes.

Eyelid Surgery
Some of the main symptoms of drooping of the eyelid, besides being visible to the to the individual, is blurry vision. You know if the upper eyelids are so droopy that they’re causing the vision to be blurry to the point where it becomes a danger to perhaps drive or walk and even do your daily functions, then you definitely want to get something done. And in that case, if the vision is affected, then insurance does cover the cost of the eyelid surgery. However if you’re only doing it for cosmetic reasons because you don’t like the appearance of the eyelid and there’s no visual compromise, then of course insurance will not pay for it.
Plastic Surgery
Plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eye is a specialized area of ophthalmology that deals with deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, tear (lacrimal) system, the bony cavity surrounding the eye (orbit), and the surrounding part of the face in both adult and pediatric patients. Ophthalmic plastic surgery is plastic surgery that is limited to the eyes and face.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is an eyelid procedure through which excess upper eyelid skin and fat tissue are removed. The procedure can be considered cosmetic, or it may be medically necessary if vision is affected by droopy eyelids. Cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance, whereas medically necessary ones are.

Ulcer
There are many causes for red eye (pink eye). Rarely is an inflamed eye contagious. The eye may be red secondary to a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection, such as a corneal ulcer or a conjunctivitis. In addition, trauma can cause the eye to be red, such as a corneal abrasion or a subconjunctival hemorrhage (broken blood vessel where the “white” of the eye appears dark red). Allergies, dry eyes, as well as contact lens side effects can all contribute to a red eye. Lastly, intraocular diseases, such as acute glaucoma and uveitis (inflammation within the eye) can lead to redness. The one true “pink eye” that is contagious is termed epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is a viral infection where the individual can be contagious for up to 2 weeks.
