Dr. Sant’Anna grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. She relocated to Wilmington after practicing for over 20 years in 2020. During her career she has treated all types of foot conditions which includes bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, fractures, sports medicine injuries, diabetic foot care, podopediatrics and general foot care. Dr. Sant’Anna performed research for an investigational pain medication treatment of postoperative pain and devised a model with 10 years of research with a premiere research company while practicing in Texas. Dr. Sant’Anna currently lives in Wilmington with her two children - twins! In her spare time, she enjoys home renovation projects, creating backyard gardens and unwinding at our local beaches.

Wound care is particularly important for those with diabetes. It’s possible that what appears to be a small wound could turn into more severe foot complications down the road if left untreated. It’s common for those with diabetes to experience neuropathy. Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that affects the body and can cause you to lose feeling in the feet. If you’re no longer experiencing feeling in your feet and a wound develops, it’s very possible it may go unnoticed if you don’t check your feet daily.

Reasons that a person may develop a bunion can vary. Some patients may form bunions due to genetic factors, complications with arthritis, or a weak foot structure. General aging can also play a role in the formation of a bunion.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails can form when the side of a toenail begins to grow into the flesh surrounding the nail. As a result, the affected toe—most commonly the big toe—may become red, swollen, painful, and—in severe cases—infected.

Corns
Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.
Calluses
Medical devices that are placed inside the shoes for walking and running are referred to as orthotics. They are used to relieve pain from abnormal foot structures, or from having general discomfort while walking. There are several types of orthotics, and choosing the right ones depends on the condition they will be correcting. Patients who have corns and calluses may benefit from wearing epidermal insoles, which can be successful in removing pressure from the affected parts of the foot. People who desire to have a balanced distribution of weight on the feet may opt to wear comfort insoles that can absorb shock. Orthopedic insoles that are made of one piece may help patients that have flat feet, or additional specific types of deformities. If you have foot pain, and are interested in learning more about orthotics, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can determine which type is correct for you.
Fungus
The area of the toes is generally warm and damp, unfortunately making it a great area for fungus to grow. If left untreated, the fungal infection can spread, which is why it’s so important to get professional help early on and look into your treatment options.

Ankle sprains are a common injury, often the result of sudden twists, rolls, or impacts that stretch or tear the ligaments connecting the bones of the ankle joint. These ligaments are vital for stability and movement, making ankle sprains a significant concern. Ankle sprains typically occur during activities that involve sudden changes in direction, uneven surfaces, or accidental missteps. Sports like basketball, soccer, and trail running, as well as everyday occurrences like tripping or stumbling, can lead to these injuries. The most common type of ankle sprain is when the foot rolls inward, causing damage to the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. Common signs of a sprain include pain, swelling, and bruising around the affected area. Walking or bearing weight on the injured ankle can be painful, and there might be a sensation of instability or weakness. In severe cases, there could be a popping sound at the time of injury, indicating a possible ligament tear. Prompt treatment is required to prevent further complications and ensure recovery. If you suspect an ankle sprain, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible to determine the extent of the injury and receive the appropriate care.

Achilles Tendonitis
There are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.
Ankle Sprain
Some sports may be considered more dangerous in terms of foot and ankle injuries compared to others. These sports may include basketball, running, football, soccer, and dancing. Sports that require tightly worn shoes as well as have a particular focus on jumping typically run a higher risk of injury. Because the feet are considered the foundation of the body, help us stay balanced, and enable us to perform our everyday activities, professional help should be sought at the first instinct of something gone wrong.

Flat Feet
When it comes to treating flat feet or fallen arches, it’s suggested you get plenty of rest. Frequently ice the affected area to help reduce swelling. Performing daily stretches are a great way to loosen up your muscles and relieve strain. It may also be beneficial to look into orthotics or shoe inserts to help relieve the pain.
Fungus Toenails
Fungal infections occur due to fungus getting through the cracks of the toes or cuts in your skin. Common signs that you may have a fungal infection include thicker than normal toenails, oddly shaped toenails, discoloration, a yellowish hue to the nail, and separation of the nail and nail bed. Fungal infections can affect anyone but are most common among men, those with diabetes or athlete’s foot, and smokers. The risk of having toenail fungus also increases as you age, if another family member has it, and if you have a weaker immune system.
Hammertoes
Hammertoe is a characterized by one or more of the toes having a bend in the middle joint. This occurs because of weakening of the muscle due to poorly fitted shoes or a genetically inherited trait.
Heel Spurs
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Ingrown Toenails
Treatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.

Plantar fasciitis may occur when the band of tissues that support the arch of your foot experience too much stress. These tissues can become strained from frequently performing sporting activities, thus causing inflammation and pain at the bottom of the heel.
Podiatric Deformities
Dr. Bachman was born in Bethesda, Maryland and was raised in Wilmington. His clinical interests are focused on pediatrics, dermatology, complications resulting from diabetes including limb salvage and surgery for the correction of all foot deformities. He continues to actively grow and provide for his patient base of 21 years. Dr. Bachman is a former varsity swimmer while attending Duke University. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, scuba diving, and spending quality time with his family. One of his great joys is being an enthusiastic spectator at his children’s sporting events.
