X-rays
Regular dental X-rays and TMJ x-rays (transcranial radiographs) are not generally useful in diagnosing TMD. Other x-ray techniques, such as arthrography (joint x-rays using dye); magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which pictures the soft tissues; and tomography (a special type of x-ray), are usually needed only when the practitioner strongly suspects a condition such as arthritis or when significant pain persists over time and symptoms do not improve with treatment. Before undergoing any expensive diagnostic test, it is always wise to get another independent opinion.

Why do back teeth decay so easily? The chewing surfaces of back teeth are rough and uneven because they have small pits and grooves. Food and germs can get stuck in the pits and stay there a long time because toothbrush bristles cannot brush them away. Who should get sealants? Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in before decay attacks the teeth. The first permanent molars -- called "6 year molars"-- come in between the ages of 5 and 7. The second permanent molars --"12 year molars"-- come in when a child is between 11 and 14 years old. The other teeth with pits and grooves -- called "premolars" or "bicuspids"-- right in front of the molars, also may need to be sealed. Teenagers and young adults without decay or fillings in their molars also may get sealants. Should sealants also be put on baby teeth? Your dentist might think it is a good idea, especially if your child's baby teeth have deep pits and grooves. Baby teeth play an important role in holding the correct spacing for permanent teeth -- so it is important to keep baby teeth healthy so they don't fall out early.

Hate that drilling noise? Scared of needles? Many people put off their trips to the dentist because of the fear and discomfort associated with the needle and the drill. Now a new technology has arrived that allows us to provide treatment without those necessary evils. Air abrasion dentistry is now available in my office. What is air abrasion dentistry? Simply put, it's an abrasive powder sprayed under pressure at the tooth to remove decay. A tiny spray of 27 micron powder is used to remove small areas of tooth structure quickly and efficiently while leaving untreated areas intact. It allows us to do "micro dentistry", removing extremely small areas of tooth structure and preserving more of your natural enamel. Will it completely eliminate the handpiece and anesthetic?Unfortunately, no. There are still procedures that will require shots and drilling. Proceduressuch as crowns, bridges, and removal of old amalgam (silver) fillings will require the handpiece and that usually means anesthetic will be required. However, for removal of oldcomposite (white) fillings and conservative areas that need repair, air abrasion is the treatment of choice. What Can Air Abrasion Do That Rotary Instruments Can't? Cut without the need for an anesthetic. Provide an ideal way to treat pediatric patients and adults who are needlephobic, dislike residual anesthetic numbness, or are sensitive to anesthetic and/or vasoconstrictors. Eliminate noise, odor, vibration, and negative psychological impact of the dental handpiece.
Bridges
Dental implants are biocompatible substitutes for lost natural teeth. They are devices for attaching artificial replacement teeth firmly to the bone. Implants can be used to support a single crown or as anchors for fixed bridges. Implants function and look like natural teeth and are provide a good solution to patients with a missing tooth or teeth.

A root canal is done when the pulp, or nerve, is damaged. In this case, a deep cavity has invaded the pulp.

Dentures
Bridges Bridges are one way of replacing 1 or more missing teeth. The bridges are fabricated by a dental laboratory after preparation of the neighboring teeth by a dentist. The bridges are usually constructed of a matching shade of porcelain, placed over a precious metal base. Many of our newer bridges use a computer-milled zirconia base for stength, and are now all ceramic. The bridge restores the natural appearance and function of the teeth. The bridge is not removable, and needs to be brushed and flossed to insure long term success. Other methods of replacing missing teeth include implants, and removable partial dentures.

While at Stony Brook, he was awarded the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Certificate of Recognition for outstanding achievement in implant dentistry. Other irreversible treatments that are of little value -- and may make the problem worse -- include orthodontics to change the bite; restorative dentistry, which uses crown and bridge work to balance the bite; and occlusal adjustment, grinding down teeth to bring the bite into balance.

What Causes TMD? We know that severe injury to the jaw or temporomandibular joint can cause TMD. A heavy blow, for example, can fracture the bones of the joint or damage the disc, disrupting the smooth motion of the jaw and causing pain or locking. Arthritis in the jaw joint may also result from injury. Other causes of TMD are less clear. Some suggest, for example, that a bad bite (malocclusion) can trigger TMD, but recent research disputes that view. Orthodontic treatment, such as braces and the use of headgear, has also been blamed for some forms of TMD, but studies now show that this is unlikely.
