Preventing such a condition from arising in the first place is certainly preferable, and there are ways to do so, including managing medical conditions that create risk. Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and alcoholism are all diseases that should be properly managed. Making healthy lifestyle choices also helps. Regular exercise and diets rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins are particularly beneficial.
Plantar Fasciitis
This is the most common cause of heel pain for adult patients. Whenever you wake in the morning and experience a sharp, stabbing pain under your heel with your first steps, plantar fasciitis is the most likely explanation. This overuse injury comes from inflammation in a band of fibrous tissueâ€”your plantar fasciaâ€”running along the bottom of your foot. The pain is often worse after extended periods of rest, which is explained by the fact that the body has been repairing the damaged tissue, but tears are reopened when each step stresses the fascia again.

Infection isnâ€™t something you should take lightly, even when it starts small. Ignored infections can get out of hand and lead to issues like gangreneâ€”particularly in high-risk people with diabetes or circulation issues. If your foot develops gangrene, you need emergency care to save your limb. Ankle Surgery

Bunions
Bunions are fairly common toe deformities that tend to be seen more often in female patients. As a resultâ€”and combined with the fact that female footwear often has narrow toe boxes and high heelsâ€”it was widely thought that womenâ€™s shoes caused this issue. Since men and children can also develop bunions, though, this seems rather unlikely.

Any part of your body can suffer from an infection and end up with serious damage, and your feet are no exception. When an infection spreads, it can impact your foot function, and even contribute to tissue death. This effect is called gangrene, and itâ€™s a life-threatening condition that could lead to a limb amputation.

It is important to note that rare cases of black toenails can be a dangerous form of skin cancer. When malignant melanoma develops, it is best treated at the earliest possible stage. Because the downward bend in the joint causes the tip of the toe to dig downward and the middle to arch upward, corns and calluses can develop at these pressure points if theyâ€™re rubbing against the inside of shoes. The problems are generally worse for a rigid hammertoe than a flexible one.
Ulcer
Due to reduced sensation, you may not detect an injury, cut, or scrape until long after the fact, and slowed circulation means that any ulcer that subsequently forms may not heal on its own. When this happens, donâ€™t try to take matters into your own handsâ€”schedule an appointment with us right away. Considering the consequences, itâ€™s not worth taking the risks.

In rare cases, you may have mistaken your athleteâ€™s foot for a different condition, such as eczema, which requires a different treatment course. Weâ€™ll of course be able to provide a proper diagnosis and get you the help you need.
Fungus
Worse, the same fungus that causes athleteâ€™s foot can spread to other parts of the body, including the hands, groin, or toenails. And cracked, dry, blistered skin can open the door for other complications, such as bacterial infections. So even if you think your athleteâ€™s foot â€œisnâ€™t that badâ€ right now, itâ€™s in your best interest to deal with it soon, rather than give it time and opportunity to spread.

Hammertoes

There are many conditions we treat here at The Kansas Foot Center that respond quite favorably to conservative care. Common issues like plantar fasciitis and stress fractures do not often require surgical intervention, but there are also some medical problems which do need surgical intervention.
