General Info
Dr. Bharat Ranganath is a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who brings his unique experience and extensive training to George Washington University. Dr. Ranganath strives to use his well-honed skills in cutting edge techniques to provide high quality, patient-centered surgical care to the community. His immersive training in microsurgery and cancer reconstruction at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City allows him to offer a vast array of options for his patients, including unique options for breast cancer reconstruction after mastectomy such as neurotized free flap breast reconstruction (DIEP flap) and alternative flaps (PAP, DUG). He has also been trained in the surgical treatment of lymphedema (LVA, Lymph Node Transplant) as well as facial reanimation and peripheral nerve surgery. Dr. Ranganath graduated Summa Cum Laude from Drexel University and earned his medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine, earning acceptance to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He then completed a six-year residency in Plastic Surgery at the renowned Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA. Here, Dr. Ranganath trained in all aspects of plastic surgery, including cancer reconstruction, trauma, congenital abnormalities including cleft lip/palate, hand and upper extremity surgery, with extensive experience in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Ranganath was elected by his peers to serve on the board of the Robert H. Ivy Pennsylvania Plastic Surgery Society, and also selected to serve nationally on the Legislative Action Committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Ranganath has authored several textbook chapters and presented his research at national society meetings. He is most proud of his work on numerous volunteer surgical mission trips worldwide, including providing care for children with cleft lip/palate in Peru and reconstructive care to those with burns and other abnormalities in India. Dr. Ranganath completed the highly competitive Microsurgery Fellowship at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Here, Dr. Ranganath worked alongside world leaders and pioneers in Plastic surgery and Microsurgery, honing his skills in complex free flap breast reconstruction after mastectomy, head & neck cancer reconstructions, facial reanimation, limb salvage, and cutting edge lymphedema surgery techniques. This unique experience allows him to offer his patients options beyond traditional breast cancer reconstruction, including more complex neurotized DIEP flaps (which offer the possibility of a breast reconstruction with sensation), or thigh based flaps such as PAP or DUG flaps for those who may not be DIEP candidates. Dr. Ranganath can also offer consultation and, for the right candidates, surgical options to treat lymphedema of the upper or lower extremities, such as Lympho-venous bypass and Lymph Node Transplants. In addition, he has a specific interest in facial reanimation, which can offer the possibility of allowing a patient to smile, blink, and control their face after paralysis from trauma, stroke, or congenital abnormality. Dr. Ranganath brings this extensive training and a keen aesthetic eye to every patient encounter to help patients get the best cosmetic and reconstructive result possible. Dr. Ranganath brings a warm heart and a calm, comforting disposition to make sure his patients know and feel they are in the best of hands under his care.
