Women's fertility can be affected by many of the same risk factors as men, but they may also have problems within the ovaries or uterus such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids. Considering the many hormonal changes that happen during and after childbirth, it really should come as no surprise that many pregnant women and new mothers experience confusing mood swings. While this is normal, there does come a point when the sadness has lasted long enough and been severe enough to cause concern.

Ovarian Cancer
Both male and female sterilization are minimally invasive surgical procedures that sever the channels through which reproductive cells travel. The recovery time is generally short and there are no long-term side effects. In fact, female sterilization (tubal ligation) may possibly reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
Cervical Cancer
A Pap smear, sometimes called Pap test, is a routine screening done at a gynecologist's office to detect irregularities in and on the cervix. Its name is an abbreviation of its inventor's, Greek doctor Georgios Papanikolaou, who developed the test in 1923. It is the most common form of cervical screening in the United States. Approximately 13,000 new cases of invasive uterine cervical cancer and 4,100 cancer related deaths occur year. Frequently, uterine cervical cancer is without symptoms, or signs. (Signs include: staining or bleeding after sex and/or vaginal discharge.) There are approximately 4,000 new vaginal cancers and approximately 1,000 vaginal cancer related deaths each year in the USA. The frequency of uterine cervical and vaginal cancer has seen a precipitous drop due to the use of the PAP test.

Urinary Tract Infection
Common causes of urinary incontinence include pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. It can also be caused by a urinary tract infection, constipation or certain neurological disorders. Risk factors, such as gender, weight and other conditions, do not generally cause urinary incontinence, but they can make it worse.

Ultrasound
A first trimester screening, performed roughly between 11-13 weeks of pregnancy, is used to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down's Syndrome, Edwards' Syndrome and Patau's Syndrome. It involves two parts, a blood test and an ultrasound screening referred to as a ‘Nuchal Scan’ or ‘Nuchal Translucency Screening.’ The screening helps your OB/GYN determine the fetus’s risk of these abnormalities.

Vasectomy
Tubal ligation, is a surgical method of sterilization for women. The fallopian tubes are blocked or severed to prevent fertilized eggs from traveling down the tubes into the uterus. While tubal ligation is typically performed laparoscopically, with tiny abdominal incisions rather than a large open surgical area, it is still considered major surgery, taking place in a hospital or similar setting with spinal anesthesia. Conversely, male sterilization (vasectomy) is a minor surgery that can be completed quickly with no hospital stay required.
