Maria's Alterations

I ignored the terrible online reviews because a friend recommended this shop and they agreed to a quick turnaround on a bridesmaid dress. Big mistake. She was rude and the results were shoddy. Hem was multiple inches higher in the front of the dress and dragging in the back and she argued with me and blamed my body shape though I had obviously tried it for her to pin it.

I made it clear that I was unhappy, and she continued to argue with me then tried to charge full price ($100!). I have never met someone less professional and I will never go there again.

DO NOT use this place. The customer service is awful! When I went in to drop off my dress the lady was on the phone for 15 minutes with her insurance company until she finally helped me. Then when I went to pick up my dress it wasn't ready by the time she said it would be. VERY disappointed!!! And they are WAY overpriced!

GREAT SEAMSTRESS

I have known Maria since moving to Birmingham 13 years ago, and I can honestly say that she is the best seamstress I have ever had the pleasure of using. Having lived in several large cities on the east coast, I have worked with many seamstresses. None compare to Maria in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, timeliness, and cost. She is definitely the BEST, and I feel very fortunate she is here in Birmingham. I am a frequent client and usually have complex fitting issues, but always trust that Maria is up to the challenge. I am amazed at what she can do.

Maria was going to charge me $50 to hem a pair of unlined pants! When I told her nevermind, she yelled at me for wasting her time if I wasn't going to have her do the work. I have never been so attacked at a place wanting business! All she had done was chalk them at that point...$50 is absurd for a basic hem. I quit using them years ago because of their attitudes and inflated prices. I was wrong to give them a second chance! Stay away from Maria's Alterations!!

Maria mauled my pants like a baby Grizzly cub. It was incredibly overpriced and resulted in horrifically shoddy workmanship. When I questioned her about the holes in my pants, her response to me was, "you didn't ask me to call you if your pants were going to look bad.." Correct me if I am wrong, but why would anyone want to pay for alterations that would look bad? Well, Maria did not seem to care, and she requested that I pay her even more than our original price because apparently it costs more to do bad work than good.

After being recommended by a friend, I came to Maria with a dilemma. My bridesmaid's dress was too small. I had extra fabric on the way and the store that I bought the dress from was certain it would not be a problem to fix the dress.



When I tried on the dress for Maria she asked me why I needed the dress. When I explained, she told me you need to tell your friend you will not wear this dress. I cannot fix it. It is not flattering on you at all. When I got upset she stated, "It seems like you care very much for your friend, but she does not care much for you or she would not have chosen this dress for you."



I left horrified. The bridal shop recommended another seamstress who took 5minutes to look at the dress and told me she would have it back in a week. No problems and you cannot tell anything was done to the dress.



Please do not be a client to this horrible business.

I have used Maria for everything from hems to tailoring men's suits to alterations for vintage clothing and I can tell you without a doubt that she and her staff are the best in tailoring and alterations.



I also recently purchased a dress from the show Project Runway and had to have this one of a kind designer gown altered. She and her staff not only did an amazing job with the fit but delivered it to me in a timely fashion. I wouldn't have trusted anyone else with such a task and had no reservations at all about using Maria's.



We are very fortunate that Birmingham has such a treasure in Maria! I will continue to use her for all my alterations and possible new designs as well.

I have used Maria's since moving to Birmingham in 2003. Her work is always exact...I have a particular difficulty finding pants to fit and have had her alter many pairs for me. She typically has to shorten the length as well as take in the waist. I have never taken a pair back for adjustments later which speaks to her accuracy. She also does an excellent job with jeans! I had a pair of jeans that I was considering throwing in the donation pile because they never fit quite right, but took them to her instead and I literally wore them until they fell apart! I was also thrilled that they looked like they did off the rack. I never worry about anything I leave with her. I have full confidence that she will tailor the garment just as I request.

Maria is always able to alter my clothing to keep me fashion forward without being trendy. It is very difficult to find someone who can alter men's clothing skillfully. She can do everything from suits to shirts. She does a great job. You will not be disappointed.
