Primary Care
It is always in your best interest to quit before any surgery. However, we do not require patients to quit for all procedures. Some surgeries we do require patients to quit and be nicotine free for at least 2 months before surgery. Breast reduction and tummy tuck procedures are the most common procedures you have to quit smoking for. The reason is the effect of nicotine on the blood vessels that cause spasticity leading to poor blood supply required to heal your incisions. If you do not have good blood supply, areas of skin can die leading to large wounds. Your primary care physician can help you with quitting.
Family Practice
The labels “cosmetic surgeon” and “plastic surgeon” are not interchangeable. A cosmetic surgeon is a doctor, any doctor, who performs procedures to enhance a patient’s looks. Plastic surgeons may sometimes refer to themselves as cosmetic surgeons if they perform primarily cosmetic procedures. But, others who perform cosmetic procedures without the rigorous regimen required by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, cannot call themselves plastic surgeons. There currently is no requirement that your procedure be performed by a plastic surgeon or even by someone who has had proper training. In fact, cosmetic procedures are performed in many practices by other types of physicians such as dermatologists, oral surgeons, dentists, general surgeons, gynecologists, family practice doctors, etc. In addition, just because a doctor tells you they are “board certified” it does not necessarily mean they are a plastic surgeon or a physician that has undergone extensive training in an accredited plastic surgery training program. If you are not careful, you could be operated on by someone who has no formal education or training in plastic surgery. Therefore, they do not have required governing oversight by exams or peer reviews to assure you that they are knowledgeable, skillful,and have proper ethics.

Breast Augmentation
Dr. Rubis will then discuss in detail your surgical plan including how your procedure(s)will be performed, potential risks associated with each procedure, what expectations you should have from your procedures, pros and cons of different surgical devices such as saline and silicone breast implants, as well as what your recovery process will entail. If you are visiting us for breast augmentation, we will also spend time trying on different size breast implants so you can determine what size is appropriate for you. We do recommend wearing or bringing a form fitting top to try on with the implants to aid you in your decision.
Breast Reduction
I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Rubis and his wife and lead nurse, Tracy! I knew I needed a breast reduction and Dr. Rubis and his team did everything in their power to help me follow the proper steps in getting my procedure covered by insurance. Beyond that, I felt safe and comfortable with Dr. Rubis in my initial consultation as well as cared for immensely by every single one of his staff members. This doctor is on-call after his surgeries, calls back immediately to answer any concerns, and even met me in office on a holiday to make sure I was healing correctly post-surgery. He and Tracy have the best bedside manner, but he is also an amazing surgeon (a combination you aren't always lucky to find in a good doctor). My breast reduction went smoothly, my scars are so incredibly minimal, and even when I called back 4 years later while researching my options for a tummy tuck, I was remembered and welcomed back. I absolutely adore this surgeon and his staff!
Breast Reconstruction
In some cases, insurance will cover breast surgeries such as breast reduction or breast reconstruction. Certain criteria must be met to qualify for coverage, and Dr. Rubis will discuss this with you during your consultation. Insurances typically do not cover tummy tuck procedures, since it is purely a cosmetic procedure and is not a medical necessity. They sometimes will cover the removal of a panniculectomy, or removal of an apron of skin on the abdomen. Again, certain criteria must be met to qualify.
Plastic Surgery
Absolutely. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board recognized in the United States by the American Board of Medical Specialties. It is the only board that will assure you that your surgeon has been trained through an accredited plastic and reconstructive training program, and had passed written and oral exams that test their knowledge, skill and ethics.
