Routine veterinary care consists of vaccinations, parasite control and dental care. Foals born to mares that are properly vaccinated should have their first vaccination between the ages of 4-6 months, depending on the time of year, then boostered one month later. Adult horses should be vaccinated a minimum of twice a year and coggins are required by law every year. Some horses may need to be vaccinated up to 4 times a year based on travel and use. Horses also need to be on a routine parasite/deworming program every 4-6 weeks.
Vaccination
It is a good idea to have a copy of your pet's medical records made prior to hurricane season, especially if your pet(s) has any chronic medical conditions that may require attention while you are evacuated. Minimally, you should have your pet's vaccination records with you, as it is mandatory in shelters and to cross state lines to be current on rabies vaccination.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
1) The Annual Physical Exam. Remember, an "annual" exam for your pet is often the equivalent of a 5-7 year interval for yourself ! A thorough physical exam is one of the most important things we do to help you keep your pet healthy and happy. Often, pets don't show obvious signs of disease until the problem is well advanced. An exam will be done that can uncover such problems as dental disease, cataracts, ear infections, heart murmurs, abdominal masses, and pain or disease of the joints.
Behavioral Counseling
Acupuncture can be used successfully to treat a variety of conditions including IVDD or back pain, osteoarthritis, soft tissue injuries, chronic cough, gastrointestinal conditions, chronic kidney disease, urinary incontinence, allergies, endocrine disorders, and behavioral problems. Acupuncture is also used for end-of-life care and management of pain, appetite, and nausea secondary to cancer.
Nutritional Counseling
If you are keeping exotic species, you need to have a source for information on proper feeding, housing, and medical care. More exotics come to us with illness or injury due to a lack of proper housing or husbandry than any other cause. Using a gram scale at home can make you aware of weight loss much earlier than by sight or feel.
Comprehensive Examination
Daily evaluation via a physical exam and including diagnostics such as ultrasound, bloodwork, x-rays are performed as needed. Over 90% of our diagnostics can be performed in the hospital, allowing immediate results. Faster lab results mean immediate treatment of our patients and their needs. We encourage animals in our hospital to be visited daily to aid in their happiness and their overall healing.
Other items you will want to have ready for a quick evacuation would include: heartworm prevention and other medications, special diets, collar and tags, microchip information, leashes and crates, medications for pets who don't travel well. For large animals: proof of a current Coggins test, a picture, microchip number, halters and leads, chronic medications.
Pain Management
Acupuncture treats a variety of conditions especially those dealing with inflammation and pain. According to the American Animal Hospital Association “acupuncture offers a compelling and safe method for pain management in veterinary patients and should be strongly considered as part of multimodal pain management plans.” Acupuncture involves inserting small thin needles into specific points, called Acupoints. Acupoints are high density areas of free nerve endings, mast cells, lymphatic vessels and small arterioles. Many of these points are areas where the nerve enters the muscle (called motor points). Research proves that when we stimulate these acupoints by placing needles in them, there is a release of beta-endorphins and serotonin which naturally cause pain relief. Acupuncture also increases blood circulation, stimulates nerves and relieves muscle spasms
Vomiting Treatment
Diarrhea Treatment
The FVRCP vaccinates against Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus, both respiratory diseases, and Panleukopenia, a GI pathogen causing severe bloody diarrhea and decreased white count (a relative of canine Parvo).
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Words like "holistic" and "natural" are there to market one product over another. "Grain Free" is now a buzz phrase but has actually been found to be harmful to the heart. There are pets with food sensitivities and allergies. 68% of reported food allergies come with beef, dairy, or wheat. Corn, which is often cited in advertising as being "bad" for dogs is not listed even in the 25% which includes lamb, chicken eggs, chicken and soy.
This booster set includes a vaccine, (Bordetella) that will help prevent or decrease the severity of a common contagious cough of dogs, seen mostly in group or "kennel" situations including grooming shops, dog shows, and pet hospitals. Leptospirosis booster protects against a bacteria that is spread by wildlife urine and contaminated water and puddles that usually causes fatal disease and is contagious to dogs and humans.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
VOMITING AND DIARRHEA - There could be many reasons why your pet is vomiting and having diarrhea such as a foreign body, parvovirus, bloody vomiting and diarrhea (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis). Most small or depressed pets should be seen quickly whereas happy and active larger pets may improve with treatment at home. Your pet may respond to a stomach protectant such as Pepto Bismol and withholding food and water for 12-24hrs in an otherwise alert pet, but some of these cases require fluids and hospitalization in pets who become depressed.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Disease similar to HIV. THERE IS NO HUMAN HAZARD. FIV is spread from cat to cat through blood only (fighting, deep wounds).
With our in house lab we can test for blood cell counts, internal organ function, electrolytes, urinary abnormalities, clotting times, heartworm and feline leukemia/fiv status. We have specific test to diagnose parvo virus, cushings disease, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Heart Disease Treatment
Each of these larvae can mature into a worm in the blood vessels of the lungs and in the heart. These worms block the flow of blood once their numbers increase, causing right-sided heart failure. Dying worms and larvae release substances that can also cause severe allergic reactions in some animals, especially cats.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease is the most common disease found in companion animal medicine. Over 70% of all dogs and cats over the age of three have some stage of periodontal disease.

X-Ray
Microchipping
The microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and is energized by radio waves of hand held scanners used by animal shelters and veterinarians.
Kennel assistants are responsible for animal handling, bathing and grooming, cleaning, feeding, walking, laundry, waste disposal, hospital maintenance and general janitorial duties.
