General Info: About Thumb Lock The Adhesive The adhesive used for the Thumb Lock system is the strongest self-sticking adhesive made by the 3M company. It provides exceptional holding strength in conditions of heavy vibration and jarring movement. Remarkably, the adhesive is non-hardening and peels off cleanly from most fastening surfaces, even gloss wood finishes. This allows the use of Thumb Lock for temporary holddown applications ( on trips ) without risk of damage to countertops or furniture. Replacement adhesive pads are available to reuse the fasteners. Thumb Lock was originally designed for the U.S. Navy to secure high-tech equipment at sea. It is now used by all branches of the military for vehicle, aircraft and shipboard applications. After sea trials and rigorous performance testing, Thumb Lock was recently added for duty aboard the Trident Nuclear Sub Fleet.
