Spiders are air breathing arthropods, that have 8 legs, and fangs that inject venom. Spiders are found in every continent, with over 40,000 spider species. The spider's abdomens bear appendages that had been modified into spinnerets. That extrudes silk. There are six types of silk glands within the abdomen of most spiders. Male spiders only survive for a few mating cycles. Female spiders may live for up to 2 years and bear as many as 50,000 offspring.Female spiders spin silk cases, each of which may contain hundreds of eggs. In the Tampa Bay area there are only two spiders whose venom is dangerous to humans: the Black widow and the Brown recluse. Most spiders hunt from a web, those that don't ambush their prey and pounce on them. Where you find high densities of spider populations, you will also find high density of spider food. Spiders normally eat other insects and unsuspecting spiders.
Wasps
There are two types of wasps that I'd like to touch on that seemed to be extremely prevalent throughout the Tampa Bay area. They are the paper wasp and mud Dauber.
Mosquitoes
There's great truth way mosquito breeds has an impact on that environment. Most mosquitoes don't travel more than 100 yards from where they emerge as adults during the lifetime. If your yard is prone to holding stagnant water in any significant quantity your is greater risk for breeding generations of mosquitoes is living in the Everglades. Most homes in the Tampa Bay area provide great shade cover for mosquitoes to harbor due to the tropical landscape that we all enjoy. Because of frequent watering, many areas tend to hold small amounts of water perfect for the laying of eggs. Many man-made drainage areas, including gutters stagnant water that will allow multiple generations and mosquitoes to breeding mature. Without some type of protection, our yards can become a significant breeding ground for growing mosquito population.
Flies
Over the past 11 years, we've upgraded the capabilities of the traditional fly spray system to a multifunction all-out attack on a nuisance insect that you may come in contact with. In theory, the idea of the fly control system is to strategically meter out, a dose of a mild insecticide, on a periodic automatic basis that will not only kill but repel flies in a barn area. The key ineffectiveness is to strategically place the misting nozzles in areas that will have the greatest impact on the fly population. One spray nozzle strategically placed above the middle of each stall were usually handle the fly problem in that specific area. Nozzles arranged along the runways, going to and from stalls will assist in controlling flies in common areas. Nozzles arranged along outer air flow roots, along soffit edges outside the stable will limit the number of flies entering the barn.
Gnats
Another bloodsucking pest that seems to have a stranglehold on Florida, and especially here in Tampa Bay is the no see-um. Then may also be known as sandflies or sand gnats. Their real name is the biting midge. They have the same outlook on life as a mosquito, the female needs to take a protein meal, usually the blood of an unwilling host. This blood is then used in the egg laying and developmental process of the next generation of no see-ums. No see-um are small, so small that they can actually go right through the screen of your pool enclosure. They are so aggressive that you can receive hundreds of bites in the matter of minutes. They are so relentless, that they been known to bite people on the fifth story of her condo overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. And now, they have been linked to diseases, that our soldiers have experienced fighting in the Persian Gulf.
Midges
Aquatic Midge populations grow exponentially in water that is high in nutrients, a muck bottom, and low oxygen. Infested lakes can easily support populations of 2,000 larva per square yard. Aquatic midge swarms can be a huge problem in Florida, seasonally worse in spring through fall, and for some lakes and ponds, it's a year-round swarm. At night they are attracted to light surrounding houses and businesses. Outdoor activity can be difficult as swarming midges can be inhaled into the mouth and nose, and get into your eyes and ears as well. Swarms fly to cool shady areas in the daylight and stain paint, stucco, roofs, cars, etc. Aquatic Midge can be found on small man-made ponds or large natural lakes.
The next line of defense would be animals, birds, bats, reptiles and amphibians, up the food chain from mosquitoes. For example, frogs and lizards are natural predators of the mosquito. Certain types of birds tend to feed on mosquitoes near dusk and dawn. Bats, feed on mosquitoes all night long. As a kid, we would watch dragonflies dive bomb around our yard, not realizing that they were eating the mosquitoes, that were eating us.
Snakes
Screen enclosures are big business in Tampa Bay. From the 1970s on many of the subdivisions developed around the Bay Area have had a welcome addition of an outdoor screen enclosure. The enclosures have been used not only to add some form of security from animals, snakes and unwanted guests, but to stave off hordes of hungry bloodsucking mosquitoes. Most Floridians couldn't imagine, having a swimming pool without a screen enclosure. In addition to screen enclosures, most Florida homes have been built to allow airflow during the tepid seasons of the year. Almost every home in Florida has pest screens on all the window enclosures. This again is due to mosquito problem that is so prevalent here. Maintenance of screens is paramount if homeowners want air flow from outdoors with some type of mosquito control in their dwellings. The desired mash for screens in Florida is 18 x 18 strands per square inch finer.
