Paramount Oral Surgery

X-rays

Crowns
Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are used to counter tooth loss. It is generally made of titanium and covered with a porcelain crown or a bridge to give the appearance of real teeth.
Bridges
An implant supported bridge is a restorative solution for spaces where three or more adjacent teeth are missing. The bridge replaces multiple adjacent missing teeth without the use of a denture. This restoration typically requires two implants to support the porcelain bridge. The bridge provides a functional and aesthetic replacement for the patient’s natural teeth.

Apicoectomy
In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the infected root tips or apex and the nearby tissue. This is known as a apical surgery or an apicoectomy. The area around the apex of the tooth that is infected is cleaned, and the tip of the root is resected and sealed. Sutures are placed and an ice pack is applied. Medication is prescribed to help alleviate any pain or discomfort and it is best to plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients will have some minor swelling and occasional bruising with some numbness.

Dentures
Once a tooth is lost, several things begin to happen that are not immediately noticeable to a patient and which can have a significant negative effect on both health and appearance. Tooth roots help hold teeth in place but they are also critical in maintaining health in the surrounding gums and supporting bone structures. Bone loss in the jawbone is one of the significant problems that naturally occurs once a tooth is lost. This bone loss can compromise the integrity of neighboring tooth roots and tooth stability. This bone loss is also a large part of what causes the “sunken” look that is seen in people who have lost several or all of their teeth. It is the reason patients who wear dentures find that over time their dentures are harder and harder to fit and keep in place.

Jaw Surgery
His surgical training was focused on the full scope of the specialty including maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery, and orthognathic surgery. A substantial focus was placed on dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant placement, bone grafting, general anesthesia and sedation, and management of maxillofacial infection and pathology. Dr. Sheen has published on dental implants in the Dental Clinics of North America Journal. He is a member of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and American Dental Association.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. David Sheen is originally from southern California. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. He went on to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Dr. Sheen then completed a one-year internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently moved to New York to begin residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, serving as Chief Resident in his final year.
Tooth Extractions
During treatment you will need to stay in the hospital for a few nights to ensure the implant placement is successfully integrated with your jawline. Cadaveric bone grafting is performed during a tooth extraction in order to prevent atrophy of the jawbone. Atrophy also can result in wrinkling of the face if bone loss is drastic enough.
Bone Grafting
The cadaveric bone that is available at tissue banks have to undergo a thorough screening process for infections, ensuring that the bone augmentation process is completely sterile. As far as the history of cadaveric bone grafting goes, there has not been a single case of transmissible disease resulting from the procedure.

Orthodontics
Impacted wisdom and cuspid (or canine) teeth are fairly common. To correct impacted teeth, there are a few treatment options. For impacted wisdom teeth, the most common procedure is extraction. For impacted canine teeth, several treatment modalities are available. Orthodontics (braces) can be used to open space for proper eruption. Primary (baby) teeth can either be extracted or surgically exposed to allow for the placement of an orthodontic bracket to help align the teeth.
