Treatment by medication, immunotherapy (allergy shots) and/or avoidance of pollen, dust, mold, food, and other sensitivities that affect the ear, nose, throat, and respiratory tract. Examples include hay fever, seasonal and perennial rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, laryngitis, sore throat, otitis media, and asthma.
Pediatric Care
By delaying the introduction of solid foods until your baby is 6 months old or older, you can also prolong your baby’s allergy-free period. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you delay adding eggs to your child’s diet until he or she is 2 years old and peanuts, tree nuts, and fish until he or she is 3 years old.
Primary Care
Payment for our routing office treatment is expected at the time the service is rendered. The physicians of the clinic are Medicare participating providers. We only accept Medicaid patients when seen and referred by the primary care physician. We do accept Medicaid as a secondary insurance but both insurance cards must be presented prior to patient being seen. The physicians of the clinic are not participating providers for all private insurances and it is the patient’s responsibility to check with their insurance prior to being seen. Please keep all receipts for insurance and tax purposes.
Ear Infections
Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear. This inflammation often begins when infections that cause sore throats, colds, or other respiratory or breathing problems spread to the middle ear. These can be viral or bacterial infections. Seventy-five percent of children experience at least one episode of otitis media by their third birthday. Almost half of these children will have three or more ear infections during their first 3 years. It is estimated that medical costs and lost wages because of otitis media amount to $5 billion a year in the United States. Although otitis media is primarily a disease of infants and young children, it can also affect adults.

Immunizations
Specific prevention strategies applicable to all infants and children such as immunization against viral respiratory infections or specifically against the bacteria that cause otitis media are not currently available. Nevertheless, it is known that children who are cared for in group settings, as well as children who live with adults who smoke cigarettes, have more ear infections. Therefore, a child who is prone to otitis media should avoid contact with sick playmates and environmental tobacco smoke. Infants who nurse from a bottle while lying down also appear to develop otitis media more frequently. Children who have been breast-fed often have fewer episodes of otitis media. Research has shown that cold and allergy medications such as antihistamines and decongestants are not helpful in preventing ear infections.

Individual treatment will vary and will be based upon symptoms, medical history, general health, examination by a physician, and the results of medical tests.

Justin M. Garner, M.D., a native of Columbus, joined Otolaryngology Associates, Ltd. in 2007 after completing his education and training. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at the University of Mississippi, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He obtained his medical doctorate (M.D.) from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. Subsequently, he completed his General Surgery internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery residency was also completed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Skin cancer, cancerous and noncancerous tumors in the head and neck, including the throat, larynx, salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroids. Examples include lumps in the neck or thyroid, and cancer of the voice box.

Eczema
Skin testing is the most sensitive and least costly way to identify allergies. People with widespread skin conditions like eczema, however, should not be tested using this method. There are other diagnostic tests that use a blood sample to detect levels of IgE antibody to a particular allergen. One such blood test is called the radioallergosorbent test (RAST), which can be performed in some patients or when eczema is present or if a person has taken medicines that interfere with skin testing. Blood taken from a single draw can be used to test for many different possible allergens.
Fungus
There are thousands of types of molds and yeasts in the fungus family. Yeasts are single cells that divide to form clusters. Molds are made of many cells that grow as branching threads called hyphae. Although both can probably cause allergic reactions, only a small number of molds are widely recognized offenders. The seeds or reproductive pieces of fungi are called spores. Spores differ in size, shape, and color among types of mold. Each spore that germinates can give rise to new mold growth, which in turn can produce millions of spores.

We provide several types of allergy testing including testing for environmental and food allergies. Depending on the particular patient, we may test for allergy using skin testing or a newer technique that allows us to test your blood for many of the common local allergens. Our clinic has the equipment and capability to perform this testing in-house, thus avoiding delays involved with sending the tests to an outside lab. This convenience allows us to provide you with faster turn-around on your results and treatment.
