…due to extreme amounts of radiation therapy, and cancer related surgeries I was disfigured past my expectations. After all of this, I was referred to Dr. Michael A. Carron.

General Surgery
Dr. Carron graduated from Lyman Briggs School at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan Medical School. After successful completion of an internship in general surgery and a residency in Otolaryngology at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center, he undertook additional fellowship training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hotaling treats all aspects of head and neck oncology, including cutaneous malignancies, salivary gland malignancies, thyroid and parathyroid tumors and malignancies, skull base tumors, and mucosal head and neck pathology. Dr. Hotaling also performs complex microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck as well as transoral robotic surgery (TORS).
Otolaryngology
Dr Hotaling completed a double major in Chemistry and Romance Languages at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in 2006. He received his medical degree for Northwestern Universityâ€™s Feinberg School of Medicine in 2010 and completed his residency training in Otolaryngology at Loyola University Medical Center in 2015. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Head & Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2016.

Reconstructive facial surgery is performed to correct functional impairments caused by burns; traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures; congenital abnormalities; developmental abnormalities; infection and disease; and cancer or tumors. Reconstructive facial surgery is usually performed to improve function, but it may be done to approximate a normal appearance. Blepharoplasty
Each blepharoplasty eyelid surgery is followed with varying degrees of swelling and discoloration that usually subsides in 7-10 days. The use of cold compresses will reduce swelling and the thread-thin scars can usually be hidden by make-up. After several months these scars gradually blend in well with the surrounding skin and become perceptible only by close scrutiny.

As the process of my nose surgery has diminished to follow up visits I thought I would take the time to thank Dr Carron for putting me in to the “nose breather’s” club. I have been a mouth breather for over four decades, since my nose injury playing sports as a teenager. The mild case of sleep apnea and constant snoring had become a part of my disrupted sleep pattern and an irritation to my family. Since my surgery in December, my snoring has decreased tremendously (and my wife thanks you for this as well) and I have had only a couple of episodes of apnea. Playing hockey is easier since I can breathe through my nose. My face shield doesn’t fog over nearly as much. Because I am Canadian and most of my friends don’t have medical insurance in Michigan, I can not recommend you to them for nose corrections. I have several friends who suffer from nasal problems similar to mine and I want you to know that I would whole-heartedly give them your name and clinic if there was a chance that they could see you. Again, thanks for all you have done to improve my quality of life.

At Michigan Facial Aesthetic Surgeons we believe facial cosmetic surgery involve techniques intended for the “enhancement” of appearance through surgical and medical techniques, and is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring your appearance, or enhancing it. Our goal is to use our medical finesse and experience to obtain the desired results for our clients.
Dermabrasion
MFAS surgeons revise scars that distort the above mentioned structures, are too long, wide, depressed, raised, overgrown or travel against the natural skin crease lines of the face. There are many effective methods to correct the problem. Dermabrasion may be used to camouflage the scar by gently sanding down the surrounding area of normal skin and lowering to the level of the scar. The scar may also be excised and the wound re-closed using meticulous plastic surgical technique. Strategies exist to change the direction of the scar so it will run in the same direction as the natural skin creases making it much less apparent. Finally, if a scar is very long and running against the natural skin creases the scar may be excised and a geometric pattern designed to break up its outline. This is known as the geometric broken line closure.

As the population ages so does our cumulative time in the sun predisposing to basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma. When present on the face, usually in a cosmetically sensitive area, our dermatology colleagues perform a highly effective excision of the tumor using the MOHS technique. Although MOHS is the best technique to conserve tissue and excise just the tumor with a safe margin, it often times results in a loss of tissue that needs to be replaced.

Broadband Light technology utilizes the power of pulsed light to deliver excellent phototherapy results. The light energy delivered by the BBL gently heats the upper layers of the skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas coagulates tissue to variable depth. This process helps restore the skin to its natural stage. The photothermal energy targets and eliminates many of the fine vessels that cause redness and the unwanted melanin responsible for pigmented lesions. In addition, by selecting the appropriate wavelength or filter, we can treat a broad range of skin conditions caused by skin aging and sun exposure.
Chemical Peels
Michigan Facial Aesthetic Surgeons now offer an alternative and/or supplement to dermabrasion and chemical peels. Instead of chemicals or exfoliation the Nano Laser Skin Peel uses light energy to instantly remove the top layers of the skin at a depth that also accelerates the skinâ€™s own renewal process by activating special messenger cells. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels often donâ€™t get deep enough and other lasers leave a layer of heat-damaged cells that interrupt the ability of these messenger cells to communicate with deeper layers of skin. Only the Nano Laser Peel system at our clinic at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn has the precision to work at just the right depth.
