Social Security Disability
If you are disabled and expect that your disability will last for at least twelve (12) months, you should immediately apply for Social Security Disability (SSD) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Your entitlement to SSD is based upon your tax contribution to the Social Security System. Based on your payments into the system, the Social Security Office will inform you as to the date you were last insured. To receive SSD, you will have to establish that you became disabled on or prior to the date you were last insured for benefits.

Bankruptcy
In a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, the debtor flies a petition with the Federal Court. A Trustee is assigned to represent the creditors. The goal in a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is to have as many of the debtor's assets covered by an exemption and obtain a discharge releasing the debtor from having to pay these debts. If assets are not covered by an exemption the Trustee may sell the asset at a court administered sale to satisfy some of the debts. A Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is the most common type of Consumer Bankruptcy.
Foreclosure
Yes, in certain cases. A Chapter 13 Bankruptcy allows a debtor to catch up on arrearages owed to save a home from foreclosure. The plan payment usually lasts 3 to 5 years. Monthly installment payments are made to the Trustee who in turn distributes the payment to the creditor. Your normal mortgage payment would also need to be made in addition to the payment to the Trustee.
