Neurotransmitters define our moods, actions, and health. The importance of neurotransmitters transcends their role in the brain. Organs throughout the body are connected to the brain via a vast network of neurons. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell the heart to beat, the lungs to breathe, and the intestines to digest. This is known as the autonomic nervous system. Nowhere in nature does there exist another class of molecules with such importance and biological influence as the neurotransmitters. To reiterate, basic knowledge of the excitatory vs. inhibitory concept of neurotransmission is key to understanding the nervous system. A balance between the levels of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters is necessary for optimal health. The list of clinical problems associated with neurotransmitters is long and continues to grow as researchers establish important links between the scientific and clinical effects of neurotransmitters. This gene is well-known because there has been more testing and research. Up to 60% of the population has a genetic defect in this gene. This is ONE gene out of hundreds and they all effect each other. However, for the sake of example, MTHFR defect is associated with migraines, depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s, autism (98% of autistic patients have this), miscarriage, chronic fatigue, peripheral neuropathy. Those who have this defect have an increased risk of cancer, do not detox heavy metals as well, and have a tendency toward addictions. Changing the diet and taking specific supplementation can compensate for this genetic defect.

Perhaps the most widespread group of toxic chemicals found in our environment. Phthalates are commonly found in after shave lotions, aspirins, cosmetics, detergents, foods microwaved with plastic covers, oral pharmaceutical drugs, intravenous products prepared in plastic bags, hair sprays, insecticides, insect repellents, nail polish, nail polish remover, skin care products, adhesives, explosives, lacquer, janitorial products, perfumes, paper coatings, printing inks, safety glass and varnishes. Phthalates have been implicated in reproductive damage, depressed leukocyte function and cancer. Pthalates have also been found to impede blood coagulation, lower testosterone and alter sexual development in children. Low levels of pthalates can feminize the male brain of the fetus, where high levels can hyper-masculinize the developing male brain.
