Many parents have concerns about their children's health care which naturopathic doctors are uniquely prepared to address. These include the overuse of antibiotics, and how to treat a variety of common complaints without having to resort to medications which may have undesirable side effects.
Primary Care
Naturopathic primary care encompasses health maintenance, acute illness and chronic disease. Rather than focusing on medications and surgery as treatment, naturopathic primary care emphasizes natural therapeutics. Modalities include life style counseling, therapeutic nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy (water therapy) and botanical (or herbal) medicine. Diagnostic techniques include physical exam, medical history and conventional lab tests. The whole person is always treated in naturopathic primary care, rather than a diagnosis, symptom or disease. When, in rare, instances, natural therapies are not effective, the naturopathic doctor will order prescription medications within her scope of practice. If a medication or service is required that is outside of her scope of practice, an appropriate referral will be made.
Ear Infections
The overuse of antibiotics is a concern for all of us. Because many children experience frequent ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis and other illnesses, and because bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, repeated courses of antibiotics are often prescribed. Naturopathic doctors use homeopathy, herbal medicines and therapeutic nutrition to treat these conditions and others whenever possible. Of course, in some cases antibiotics will be required. In those cases, naturopathic doctors would either prescribe those antibiotics within the scope of their practice or refer to another doctor if appropriate.
Immunizations
There has been an explosion in the number of children and adults who are being diagnosed as having ADD, ADHD or are being placed on the autism spectrum. The reason for this is not entirely known, although we suspect a combination of factors including food sensitivities, reactions to vaccinations in susceptible children, exposure to toxic chemicals, heavy metal toxicity, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and gastrointestinal dysfunction, often including yeast overgrowth. Dr. Krassner uses an individualized approach which includes but is not limited to therapies recommended through the D.A.N. protocol (Defeat Autism Now) to address the needs of each person. She uses many modalities including nutrition, vitamin and mineral supplementation, herbal medicine, homeopathy and functional medicine, depending on the child. She also treats adults who fall into any of these areas whether they have received official diagnoses or not.

Endometriosis
As in other aspects of naturopathic primary care, the naturopathic doctor will choose natural therapeutics as opposed to drugs and surgery whenever possible. Naturopathic doctors have a broad spectrum of homeopathic, botanical and nutritional medicines to draw from when dealing with gynecological concerns. This, vaginitis, PMS, menstrual cramps, abnormal pap smears, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and many other complaints can be approached without medications.

Hypothyroidism
Hormones are specialized chemicals secreted by various glands including the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, pituitary. Each one plays an important role in the regulation of body functions, but they must be synchronized for the body to be in optimal health. Hormonal imbalance can result from glandular disease as well as the natural process of aging. However, hormonal imbalance can be diagnosed and treated with the aid of specialized testing. Dr. Krassner uses natural substances including herbs, supplements and homeopathy to bring the hormones back into balance. When needed, she prescribes bio-identical hormones, which are chemically the same as the body s natural hormones. Many people can benefit from hormonal balancing, including those with hormonal imbalances such as adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism, menopause, peri- menopause and low libido. Often, underlying hormonal imbalances have not been officially diagnosed, but are indicated by symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, insomnia and swings in mood and energy.

Homeopathic medicine, like naturopathic medicine, is based on the philosophy that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. Infinitesimal amounts of substances derived from plant, mineral and animal sources are used to stimulate that healing ability. A remedy is chosen based on the totality of each person s symptom picture, taking into account physical, mental, emotional and spiritual factors. A very detailed history is taken on the first visit to gather as much information as possible. These individual characteristics make it possible to prescribe exactly the correct substance for that person. It is important to emphasize that a remedy is not prescribed for asthma or anxiety or eczema or depression. It is prescribed for the person with those conditions. Only one remedy is prescribed, which will address all of that person s concerns, rather than prescribing something different for each complaint.
