“I have been taking my son, Jacob to Sanford Pediatric Dentistry since 2011. I was unsure of how my 2 year old would react to someone other than his mom or dad cleaning his teeth, but the staff at SPD knew exactly what to do. As soon as we walked into the office, my son noticed all of the characters on the walls and the bright colors. The staff were so courteous and welcoming from registration to check out. They made my child and I feel so important. My son was anxious at first, but the staff made him feel so comfortable and they were so patient with him. After his dental cleaning, my son sat up and said, “ that wasn’t bad at all, mom.” Once Dr. Antonio came in, my son was excited to see him. Dr. Antonio was wearing a silly hat and a great smile. My son thought this was the best thing ever. The best part of my experience with Sanford Pediatric Dentistry was the fact that I was able to be at my son’s side the entire time. I was included and involved throughout the entire process. My son loved the surprise coins for the prize machines at the check-out. Fluoride Treatment
Your pediatric dentist may also recommend protective sealants or home fluoride treatments for your child. Sealants can be applied to your child’s molars to prevent decay on hard to clean surfaces.
Dental Sealants
The chewing surfaces of children’s teeth are the most susceptible to cavities and least benefited by fluorides. Sealants are applied to the tops or chewing surfaces of back teeth and are highly effective in preventing tooth decay. Sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth. Sealant’s commonly last 3-4 years. Dietary habits such as chewing ice or hard candy can shorten the life expectancy of a sealant. No numbing is required to place them.
Space Maintainers
Space maintainers are used when a primary tooth has been prematurely lost to hold space for the permanent tooth. If space is not maintained, teeth on either side of the extraction site can drift into the space and prevent the permanent tooth from erupting normally.

Find the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root portion. You may rinse the tooth but DO NOT clean or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a gauze. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk. If the patient is old enough, the tooth may also be carried in the patient’s mouth. The patient must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Pulpotomy
Dental caries (cavities) and traumatic injury are the main reasons for a tooth to require pulp therapy. Pulp therapy is often referred to as a "nerve treatment", "children's root canal", "pulpectomy" or "pulpotomy". The two common forms of pulp therapy in children's teeth are the pulpotomy and pulpectomy.
Root Canal Treatment
A pulpectomy is required when the entire pulp is involved (into the root canal(s) of the tooth). During this treatment, the diseased pulp tissue is completely removed from both the crown and root. The canals are cleansed, disinfected and in the case of primary teeth, filled with a resorbable material. Then a final restoration is placed (usually a stainless steel crown).

Dr. Nicole H. Nelson (Dr. Nicole) is a native of Cleveland Ohio. Dr. Nicole earned her Bachelors degree from Miami University in Oxford Ohio. After college she attended Dental School and completed her Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency training program at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Nicole has a commitment to public health and she also has earned a Master of Public Health degree from Cleveland State University. Prior to joining us at SPD, for more than ten years she served as dental director at a federally qualified health center and as a clinical instructor at CWRU. Dr. Nelson is a general dentist who enjoys restoring smiles. She will be exclusively treating our fast growing teenage population who need adult dental care services.
