My buddy actually brought me here to celebrate his graduation and my experience here was absolutely wonderful and will always be remembered. I thought it looked like a little hole in the wall with mediocre dishes, uptight (too cool for school) staff, rushy, broken english / mom & pop-shop. who just want you to eat, pay, and leave.
to my total surprise, the staff was very friendly, spoke perfect english =), and knew there stuff.
and didn't at all rush us out of the door.
although we did have to wait a little while for a table, we went to the back of the restaurant to have some drinks in their lounge. the dj for the night was just walking in and setting up (i forget his name) but he was friendly and greeted us, and even offered to buy us a drink while we waited. we had a sake bomb w/him, and grabbed some beers at the bar and in a short while were ushered back to the front of the restaurant to be seated.
we got a table right across from the sushi bar, which was great becuase we can see the chef's making the food. Our waitress arrived with our waters and my buddy ordered the garlic edemame and some miso soup to start us off and small talk. the soup was rather salty, but the garlic edemame was sooo good, I thought to myself, that if that dish was sold in a supermarket or vending machine, i'd be the happiest man alive. enough said.
we finally were able to figure what to eat, so we started off with some Hamachi Sashimi, it was buttery smooth and delicious. some kanapachi- easily my 2nd favorite, tried some samplers, and finished off with some uni. everything I tried or had was atleast a 7.5 - 9 on a scale of 1 thru 10 , and the presentation of the dishes were of equal quality. although it seemed like forever at times waiting for the next dish. which is fine, since the place was fairly busy, the time spent there was actually very enjoyable. the vibe inside the place was friendly, comforting, and the perfect hint of hip-ness. defenitely not the hollywood hip-ness, where you would see douchebags with muliple ladiy friends girls gawking about the latest trends and being obnoxiously drunk and making out while while watching a movie on thier iPhones. no, Not here.
just regular every-day people, eating, and laughing. enjoying some really fresh sushi, and having a good time with their family and friends.
The sushi here is easily the best in san diego, and reasonably priced. And, I say reasonably because if you ever go for sushi, and not know where you are actually going to eat. KNOW THIS. be prepared to bring a little extra money just in case. it's just my personal code of sushi streets. because some sushi restaurants in san diego are way over priced.
Ebisu is worth it, and i would defenitely come back again.
