Overall
DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYBODY

A while back one of my friends, while talking about their son’s school said: We’ll keep him at public school till middle school to make him tough. I thought of it as a joke, when the same friend added that public school develops “excellent survival habits”.

http://www.powayusd.com/pusdcves/ My child went to Canyon View School for over a year. Starting with kindergarten, we developed some negative impressions compared to the preschools that my son attended. During preschool, my child was always a teacher’s favorite, the nicest and cutest kid in the class. The teachers and caregivers had only good things to say about him. When we got to Canyon View Elementary School, the nightmare started from the first week. The child turned out to be one of the most problematic. Why?

The schema was simple. Canyon View Elementary School cares more about donations than about educating children. Things such as money for computers that we never saw and my child never got to use, donations for running events, for “teachers” appreciation, and all kind of things. The requests never end.

At the same time, my son constantly gets ‘cat’ slips for silly things like trying to kiss another child or for touching another child’s shoulder, and is sent to see the principal. This occurs on average once or twice per week. Their methods of correcting behavior are very strange. It seems that time would be better spent actually teaching than trying to ostracize students for such trivial and petty offenses. I never saw anything like what teachers would do in my time! Spare the rod and spoil the child was their major. Imagine sitting a misbehaving child in a circle of other kids, and pointing at him, saying “you lied! You are a liar”. This is modern education?

The First grade teachers do not want to deal with any issues, neither behavioral nor educational. They would rather assign your child to some self esteem lowering group for kids who are NOT THAT GOOD AT READING rather then encouraging the child’s progress. I won’t even mention the unqualified volunteers that are assigned to supervise children during class, and honestly have no business being there.

The teaching staff has a negative attitude, and do not want to cooperate with parents. Like any parent, you know your child, and can say if there is a problem or not. During one meeting, I asked the teacher to send home additional work for my son to help improve his reading and writing. My request was completely ignored, even though she cheerfully agreed at the meeting. The word hypocrite comes to mind.

The teachers are completely disrespectful of parent’s opinions. The Canyon View teaching staff will try to put parents in a position where their opinion doesn’t matter. Some teacher who has spent a month and a half in the class with your child suddenly controls his life! You do not feel safe leaving your kid for 5-6 hours with them. They take everything to an extreme and create serious problems where problems didn’t exist before. The end result of their misguided work, knee-jerk reactions and meddling is that the child begins to feel frustrated and unmotivated. The child’s priority becomes not getting in trouble each day, rather than focusing on important things like learning. It seems that the staff at this school would prefer to be caretakers for a school full of docile, Ritalin taking zombies, who are OK as long as they don’t cause a disturbance, rather than facing the challenge of being educators.
