Male Infertility
Andrology is the medical subject that deals with health of male, particularly relating to the problems of the male reproductive system and urologist problems that are unique to men. Andrology also includes the diagnosis of male infertility, therapeutic techniques to improve fertility, embryology services such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo cryopreservation, consultation services, research into infertility, gamete and embryo banking and patient and health care provider education. In more than 90% of cases, male reproductive disorders have an organic (bodily) cause which can be diagnosed and treated successfully – sometimes with medication, at other times with external devices or with surgery. Men are more susceptible to heart disease than women, and tend to have a slightly shorter natural average life span. However, men are more resistant to many conditions that adversely affect women, such as osteoporosis.
Erectile Dysfunction
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the inability to take control of the holding in urine in the bladder. This is usually cause by weak or too active muscles that keeps the urine from leaking out of the urethra. Weak urethra muscles can’t handle the pressure build up in the bladder at which a simple sneeze or cough will result in incontinence. And too much active muscles will have the same result. Abnormal nerves send signals to the bladder at the wrong time, causing its muscles to squeeze without warning leading to a strong urge to go to the bathroom even when there is still little urine in the bladder. Studies shows Women are more likely to have urinary incontinence than men. Up to 35% of the total population over the age of 60, averaging over one in three women are estimated to have bladder control problems.

Gynecology
Tremendous progress in basic and clinical research over the past few years has led to a great improvement in our understanding of male reproductive function. Andrology, the branch of medicine that deals exclusively with disorders of the male reproductive system, is the outcome of this research. It is the counterpart to gynecology, which deals with medical issues which are specific to women. Thus, Andrology is to the male what gynecology is to the female.
Female Infertility
When faced with infertility, most couples will begin evaluation and therapy with either their gynecologist, a reproductive endocrinologist (female infertility specialist), or an urologist. The Andrology lab is available to physicians as a reference laboratory to evaluate and assist in the treatment of the couple. Most andrological disorders are seldom discussed socially for reasons of shyness, guilt or embarrassment. The true magnitude of these problems is therefore not known to many.

Internal Medicine
A Urologist is a physician who has completed a certified residency training program. A board certified Urologist has successfully completed oral and written exams conducted by the American Board of Urology. Urologists must repeat certification exams every 10 years. Urologists have specialized knowledge and skill with regard to problems of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as surgical subspecialty, the urologist requires knowledge of internal medicine, gynecology, and other specialties. Bladder Cancer
Cystoscopy is a procedure used by doctors to diagnose and surgically remove bladder cancer cells. It involves inserting a thin, tube-like instrument called a cystoscope into the bladder. Traditional cystoscopes have a white light and video camera attached to them. Blue light cystoscopy is another procedure with an improved tumor detection.

Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are chemical crystal masses that develop in concentrated urine and may move into the urinary track where they cause a significant amount of pain. Many stones resolve themselves while others can be treated medically with non-invasive procedures and medications.
Testicular Cancer
A number of non-cancerous conditions, such as testicular injury, can produce symptoms similar to those of testicular cancer. Inflammation of the testicle (orchitis) caused by viral or bacterial infections can result in painful swelling. Although cancer of any kind is a frightening diagnosis, testicular cancer is highly treatable and usually curable.

Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death of men in this country; it is second only to lung cancer. Prostate cancer claims the lives of more than 41,000 American males each year. It is the most common cancer in men in the United States.

Depression
Psychiatry
Premature ejaculation, also known as rapid ejaculation, lacks a definition that is agreed upon by all practitioners but essentially is the condition whereby a patient ejaculates with minimal sexual stimulation and before he wishes it to occur. It can be life-long (primary) or secondary. There are numerous theories as to the cause but most cases are probably multi-factorial with a contribution from both psychological and physical factors. This is believed to be the most common sexual dysfunction in males with almost 30% of men of all ages suffering from this condition. Interestingly however, the quality of life of these patients is not negatively affected by their condition. The management of this problem is best handled in a combined psycho-pharmacologic fashion. The use of medications to increase ejaculation time is useful in permitting the patients to practice senate focus exercises to recondition the ejaculatory reflex. The latter technique is essential to the long-term cure of premature ejaculation. To date, there is minimal evidence-based data assessing the outcome of this therapeutic approach. At the Sexual Medicine Program at The New York Presbyterian Hospital, the physicians work very closely with Dr. Michael Perelman, Co-Director of the Human Sexuality Program in the Department of Psychiatry in the management of patients with this problem.

Radiation Therapy
Today, four different modalities are employed for treatment of prostate cancer-surgery to remove the cancer; radiation therapy (including brachytherapy, in which radioactive seeds are “planted” in the cancer to kill the cancer cells); cryosurgery (freezing the cancer cells to kill them); and hormonal therapy. Treatment is, of course, tailored to the individual patient and one mode or combination may be used. A major concern often expressed by prostate cancer patients is impotence because until recently, impotence was almost always a by-product of surgical treatment. But new techniques have made the occurrence of impotence much less likely. In consultation with his doctor, the patient has a wide choice in choosing the treatment that makes him most comfortable. But, whatever treatment is chosen, the most critical aspect is still early detection.

Ulcer
In general, causes of infertility in men can be explained by deficiencies in ejaculate volume, sperm concentration or too few sperm (oligospermia), complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia), sperm motility (asthenospermia), or sperm morphology (terato- spermia). Nearly 70% of conditions causing infertility in men can be diagnosed by history, physical examination, testicular volume estimation, and hormonal and semen analysis. A rational approach is necessary to perform the appropriate work-up and to choose the best treatment options for the couple. It especially affects diabetics (more than 50% of whom are impotent), hypertension, smokers, alcoholics, patients with liver, kidney and heart disease, men who are on medication for unrelated disorders such as hypertension, peptic ulcer or depression (more than 250 drugs are known to cause impotence) etc.
