Overall

After perusing pictures on the store website, I took my 1930s Shirley Temple Doll and my 1930s Arranbee Doll to The Doll Hospital at Edison and Kellogg for repair in August of 2014. After meeting the owner/operator, a kind older gentleman, who showed me his workshop and a doll undergoing repair, I decided to trust The Doll Hospital at Edison and Kellogg with my restoration.

The dolls were ready on Friday, October 3. When I returned to get them, my heart broke. They looked worse than they did before this man touched them. Both dolls were still cracked in places, paint was smeared on Shirley's lips and the baby's head. Shirley's dress had been washed, but not ironed--her dress was supposed to have neat pleats. He was supposed to supply clothes for the baby and didn't. Both dolls were supposed to have their eyes replaced, but that work was not done. I wish Yelp would allow me to post pictures so that you would be able to see how horrible and scary the dolls look.

When I questioned the owner, he ignored me and pointed out that the clothes had been cleaned and that he sewed Shirley's shoe strap to her sock because it didn't have a snap. There were other customers in store and I didn't want to cause a scene so I paid the balance and left.

I was charged $180 for substandard work. I'm very upset, but to be honest, the money is the least of my troubles. The dolls are family heirlooms--the Arranbee baby, in particular, holds a special place in my heart as it belonged to my father when he was a toddler.

I'm not posting this information out of malice. I just hope that my bad experience will help someone else avoid the same situation. --Claudia R.
