Dental Examination

Teeth Cleaning
Regular dental cleanings, performed by a registered dental hygienist, are a crucial part of preventive dental care. By removing plaque and tartar, your oral health is enhanced and your risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease are reduced. Your dental hygienist will utilize manual instruments to remove moderate plaque and tartar buildup, or an ultrasonic device to scale away heavier buildup. The cleaning is finished with polishing, a pleasant procedure that cleans the surface of teeth, removes stains, and leaves the mouth feeling clean and refreshed.

Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Fillings
Resin Composite
Fillings. We will remove all areas of decay, and replace with a filling made of silver (amalgam) or composite resin. Composite resin fillings have surged in popularity because their appearance perfectly matches the natural appearance of teeth.
Veneers
Customized, wafer-thin veneers (also called porcelain laminates) are cemented directly onto the front of the tooth, resulting in a natural appearance that covers any irregularities or aesthetic concerns.
Crowns
Trauma powerful enough to knock out a tooth may sometimes necessitate a hospital emergency room visit. The patient should visit a dentist as soon as possible to maximize chances of saving the tooth. If the lost tooth can be recovered, it should only be handled by the crown, or white part of the tooth. The tooth should be immediately rinsed in cool water to remove any dirt, gently re-inserted into the empty tooth socket, and held in place with a clean washcloth. If the patient cannot re-insert the tooth, it should be kept moist until the emergency dentist visit, preferably in milk, saline solution or saliva.
Bridges
Fixed bridges can improve chewing and aesthetic appearance, restoring the smile with a more permanent solution than dentures. Bridges replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. Your dentist will take a mold of the gap where a tooth is missing, and then send it to a laboratory to prepare a customized bridge. Before inserting the bridge, the surrounding teeth are prepared. The bridge is set into place and the artificial tooth is securely cemented to the adjacent teeth, restoring the attractive natural appearance and functionality of the tooth that was lost. If a resin-bonded bridge is chosen, the artificial tooth is secured by means of a metal appliance that attaches to the backs of adjacent teeth.

Restorative Dentistry

Root Canal Treatment
With conscious sedation, patients are given just enough sedation to fully relax and sit quietly and comfortably; if deeper sedation is required it can be administered during the procedure. There are different types of modalities and products used for conscious sedation including nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), and oral sedatives. Whichever type of sedation dentistry is right for you and your unique dental needs will be discussed with you prior to your appointment or during your visit as needed. Procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures, and periodontal treatments usually require some kind of sedation.

Deep Cleaning
Periodontitis will require more aggressive treatment. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be recommended which involves the removal of plaque/calculus below the gums. For your comfort, anesthesia is used and the procedure is broken up into 2 (or more) visits for the deep cleaning itself and a final polish visit where we remove any residual stain and check for persistent areas of inflammation.

Dentures
Partial dentures are a removable replacement option for people that are missing one or more of their teeth on either the upper or lower jaw. When replacing teeth with a partial denture, the remaining teeth are used to support and stabilize the partial denture. Greater support and retention is achieved when there are more teeth present. A good bone structure will also contribute to a stable, well-supported partial denture. It is important to verify that the remaining support teeth are healthy enough to be used as anchor teeth. It is possible that additional dental work will be required to restore the remaining teeth so they are healthy enough to predictably support the partial denture.

Implants offer stability because they fuse to your bone. Integration of the implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes.

Tooth Extractions
Modern dentistry makes routine tooth extractions relatively comfortable, painless procedures. For seven days after the extraction, your tooth socket will require some care. You will be instructed to steer clear of the empty tooth socket when brushing your teeth. Some bleeding can be expected, and pain medication may be prescribed for residual discomfort.

Orthodontics
Dr. Lam trained in gum and bone disease for general dentistry at the University of Pacific Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry and later on with Dr. Swanson, a periodontist, for 13 years beginning in 1989. She completed a two-year training in orthodontics for general dentistry at the Academy of GP Orthodontics in 1992, and served as a clinical assistant instructor for the program. She completed advanced dental training at both the Dawson Academy and The Pankey Institute in 2005. Dr. Lam began her implant training with Calcitek in 1991, and continued surgical implant residency with Nobel Biocare in 1992. She completed both advanced implant residency and prosthetic residency with Dr. Carl Misch in 2014, and became a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. She has given lectures on dentures, and has taught interdisciplinary treatment plan for complex cases in several organizations. Dr Lam has been serving as a CPR instructor for Sacramento District Dental Society since 1991. She was trained at UCLA for Dental Sleep Apnea, and is a qualified dentist with American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Braces
Gingivitis is easily treated with a professional cleaning (prophy) and proper home care to remove the plaque before it becomes calculus. Contributing factors may be dry mouth (due to medications or medical conditions), braces, mouth-breathing, and many more. We will work together to help you maintain healthy gums.
