Dr. Calamari completed an internal medicine internship at Greenwich Hospital and then completed residency training in diagnostic radiology at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. After completing a fellowship in neuroradiology at North Shore Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center, she was elected as senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology.

The Protecting Access to Lifesaving Screening (PALS) Coalition is pleased to see the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) propose to recommend that women begin breast cancer screening mammography starting at age 40.
Computed Tomography
During a CT scan, as you are laying still, a high-speed rotating ring made up of x-ray detectors and an x-ray tube rotates around the part of the body that the radiologist is studying. As the ring revolves around the patient, a narrow slice of the body is imaged from hundreds of angles. The ring is then incrementally moved and the next slice is x-rayed. The cross sectional images that are recorded are so thin that they provide incredible detail for the radiologist; far greater detail than a conventional x-ray. CT is used to diagnose a variety of diseases as internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels can be seen with such clarity. For some studies, the images are all taken and then the CT computer combines all of the images to create a 3-D image of the part of the body being studied.
Radiation Therapy
The proposed change to start screening mammography at age 40 is an important acknowledgement that, while most women develop breast cancer later in life, young women do develop this horrible disease, often developing rapidly in more aggressive forms. And, as the USPSTF statement notes, “Black women are 40 percent more likely to die of breast cancer than White women and too often get deadly cancers at younger ages.” The need for earlier screening and diagnosis is greater for women with inherited mutations associated with increased risk of cancer, such as the BRCA genes, and for Ashkenazi Jewish women, Black, and Latina women, and women who were treated with radiation therapy for cancer as children or young adults.

Joint Replacement
As with all MRI’s, to be sure the exam will be a safe one, patients should inform the technologist of their medical history such as if they have any metal clips or pins in their body, joint replacement, cosmetic metal implants i.e., cochlear (ear) implants, or a heart pacemaker.

In 1994, during a routine mammogram I was diagnosed by Dr. Diane LoRusso with early stage breast cancer and was advised to see a breast surgeon. Rye Radiology has added a 1.5 Tesla high field MRI to our practice in addition to our open MRI. The advanced imaging capabilities of our 1.5 Tesla high field system enables us to perform high resolution MRI of the breasts with 3-D CAD analysis of the images.
