Teeth Cleaning
Receding gums can be the result of several things such as periodontal disease, aggressive tooth brushing, teeth clenching, grinding, genetics, and tobacco use. Healthy gums protect the roots of your teeth. When gum recession occurs, the tissue surrounding the teeth pulls away exposing the root. This is where the phrase “long in the tooth” comes from, and the result is longer looking teeth which may make you look older. Gum recession may also lead to increased risk of root decay, and sensitivity. If left untreated, gum recession can eventually lead to tooth loss since supporting bone is lost as well. Dr. Shack will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your gum recession, and then present you with options to correct it and prevent further recession. She will customize a plan for you, recommending the best home care products for gentle yet effective oral hygiene. Periodontal Surgery
As a Periodontist, Dr. Shack is a specialist highly skilled in treating the gums and bone surrounding your teeth as well as placing and treating dental implants. She has taken extensive laser training to offer comfortable, minimally invasive options in place of conventional periodontal surgery.

Dentures
Dr. Shack will first consult with you to form a treatment plan tailored to your needs. The number of teeth that need replacement will determine your treatment options. A single missing tooth may be replaced with a single dental implant without altering your healthy adjacent teeth. Multiple missing teeth or missing a full arch of teeth opens the door to a few different options. Adequate bone to support implants is important to long term success. When bone is inadequate, grafting may need to be done either before or along with implant placement. Dental implants can prevent adjacent teeth from being cut down for a traditional bridge. They can also hold loose dentures in place to prevent pain and embarrassment while speaking and eating in front of others.

Tooth Extractions
Laser treatments include minimally invasive periodontal therapy to eliminate bacteria from diseased toth roots and implants, tooth extraction assistance, exposure of impacted teeth, frenectomies including Tongue-Tie, oral biopsies, removing excess gum to treat a gummy smile, removal of gum pigmentation and teeth whitening. “Low Light Laser Therapy” is also used at the completion of many procedures to reduce swelling and discomfort, resulting in a faster recovery.

Orthodontics
If your child is experiencing certain speech, eating, or orthodontic problems, Dr. Shack may recommend a procedure called a frenectomy, which removes the connective tissue (frenulum) at either the top or the bottom of the mouth, helping to correct these problems. A frenulum binding the tongue from moving freely (“Tongue-Tie”) may result in pronunciation difficulties as well as affecting proper growth of the lower jaw. A frenulum may also extend in between the front teeth causing a gap, which is not easily closed with orthodontics unless the tissue is removed. If the frenulum is not removed, the gap may be more likely to recur after orthodontics, sometimes even if a retainer is worn. Gum recession is another result of a frenulum pulling at the neck of a tooth. The result can be loss of the tooth if not addressed properly. The earlier these issues are identified, the simpler treatment may be. Frenectomies are a safe and convenient option for patients of all ages, and can be performed by Dr. Shack using a laser for quick recovery and less discomfort than traditional techniques.
