Male Infertility
According to the CDC, (Center for Disease Control) one in eight couples or 7.4 million couples will have trouble getting pregnant in the United States. The Nevada Center For Reproductive Medicine estimates factors affecting men account for about half of the causes of infertility. Until recently, many of these couples were only able to become parents through the use of donor sperm or adoption. Fortunately, many forms of male infertility are treatable.

Female Infertility
Polycystic ovarian syndrome affects approximately 5 million women in the United States, or about 4% of all reproductive-aged women. It is the most common hormone disorder in reproductive-aged women and is the leading cause of female infertility.

Dr. Whitten has committed his life to helping couples achieve their goals of parenthood. It brings him great joy to see his patients overcome their infertility and celebrate the gift of life with them. He enjoys the lifelong relationships he builds with his patients. He is a board-certified subspecialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Raised in northern Nevada, Dr. Whitten obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Nevada Reno. He continued his education in Nevada and obtained his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. His training took him to Phoenix, Arizona where he performed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. During residency, he received multiple awards for clinical excellence in patient care and teaching. He then moved his family to Alabama for a three-year fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While in fellowship Dr. Whitten presented his research at multiple scientific meetings. At the completion of his training, he was fortunate to be able to return to northern Nevada to practice at NCRM. He enjoys spending time with his family and frequenting Lake Tahoe on his days off. Endometriosis
NCRM offers a number of reproductive surgeries including, but not limited to, removal of fibroids, polyps, and scar tissue that involve the endometrial cavity, removing endometriosis and scar tissue in the pelvic cavity, and microscopically reconnecting fallopian tubes after tubal ligation has occurred.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy testing typically occurs 8 and 10 days after the embryo transfer. If high quality embryo(s) are transferred, very high pregnancy rate is achieved per frozen embryo transfer. Embryo cryopreservation techniques and capabilities have become an increasingly important therapeutic strategy in assisted reproduction. About 20% of all offspring born worldwide from IVF cycles are from embryo cryopreservation and frozen embryo transfer procedures.

Ultrasound
The polycystic ovary contains many small cysts, 2 – 6 mm in diameter. In the past, it was diagnosed during surgery when the ovary could be seen. Now, an ultrasound examination can reveal the polycystic nature of an ovary. Since using ultrasound, polycystic ovaries have been observed in 25% of normal women. Hence, it is important to distinguish the findings of polycystic ovaries and PCOS.

Egg cryopreservation was originally intended for use in women that were knowingly going to lose their fertility potential and wanted to do something about it. For example, a woman diagnosed with cancer who was planning to undergo chemotherapy may have had her eggs cryopreserved before the chemotherapy treatment started. When she defeats her cancer and begins her planning for a family, her eggs will be available to use. Currently, many women are electing to cryopreserve their eggs for many different reasons. Some are using the technology to avoid the effect of aging that is seen in all women as they get older. This may allow them more time to build their career or to find the right partner in life before starting their family.
