Glaucoma
The term glaucoma describes a family of diseases that causes damage to the optic nerve and the optic disc.Â When the nerve fibers that make up the optic nerve are damaged, they are unable to transmit data to our brain. Dr. Suzanna Billinghurst uses state of the art technology to diagnose and treat glaucoma at Orion Eye Center.
Ophthalmology
Hoping to combine his love for basic science and improving human health, Dr. Constantine spent nine years earning both his MD and PhD at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. It was during his graduate training that he began to develop his love of ophthalmology and, more specifically, the retina.
Macular Degeneration
Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is a very common disease. It may be important to treat ARMD to maintain your eyesight. Macular Degeneration reduces vision in the central part of the retina. It usually does not affect the side (or peripheral) vision. Macular Degeneration is genetic. Its effects are severe and can be irreversible if ignored. We recommend you meet with a retinal specialist to discuss your risk of the acquiring the condition.

A cataract is a clouding of the eyeâ€™s natural lens, which blocks or changes the amount of light going into the eye. The retina relays the light input to your brain.Â Â
Cataract Surgery
As we age, the natural lens in our eyes can calcify and become clouded. Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure to remove the natural, clouded lens and replace it with a clear, artificial lens so you can see your world in brighter colors and sharper focus.
Eye Exam
Glaucoma is best detected by a dilated eye exam and detailed analysis of the optic nerve.Â Routine eye pressure checks without dilation will fail to diagnose many cases because the pressure of the eye is not the best indicator of glaucoma presence or risk.

Upon completion of his medical school and graduate school training, Dr. Constantine completed his intern year in internal medicine at the University of Utah and then transitioned to Durham, North Carolina where he completed his ophthalmology residency at the highly regarded Duke Eye Center.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition resulting from damaged blood vessels of the retina in people who have diabetes. This condition can occur in either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is caused by excessively high blood sugar levels.Â The blood vessels are damaged by the diabetes, which can cause symptoms. If left untreated, the eye may try to compensate by forming new, abnormal blood vessels, which can leak and create scar tissue that leads toÂ loss of vision. In some cases, diabetic retinopathy does not cause any symptoms so patients suffering from diabetes should have regular eye exams from an ophthalmologist.
