More Info

The Birthplace of North Carolina's Capital

General Info
Joel Lane's house, a jewel of mid-Atlantic Georgian architecture, was built circa 1770 in North Carolina's back country. In 1792, Joel Lane sold 1,000 acres to the state of NC for building the new capital city. His house is open for tours led by costumed docents who will take you on a virtual trip back in time to the founding of the state and the nation. Also on the site is a gorgeous neo-colonial garden, herb garden, middle-class home of 1790, and a Visitors Center with a museum shop packed with delightful books, gifts, and souvenirs for young and old.
