Cigarette smoking in pregnancy has been associated with increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, low birth weight, placental abruption, and perinatal mortality. Following delivery, an increase in cases of respiratory and ear infections and of sudden infant death syndrome is observed in the infants of parents who smoke. Your doctors strongly encourage you to stop smoking and to ask for help if you need it.
Emergency Care
If you have a medical emergency or feel that you are in labor outside of regular office hours, we ask that you contact our answering service at (919) 571-1040. The physician on call will contact you within 15 minutes of your call. Patients can also receive after-hours care at the OB Emergency Department at Rex Hospital. If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
Immunizations
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a widespread virus and is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 79 million people in the U.S. had this virus. There are many different types of HPV; some cause no harm. Others can cause diseases of the genital area. For most people, the virus goes away on its own. When the virus does not go away, it can develop into cervical cancer, precancerous lesions, or warts of the vagina, vulva, anus and cervix depending on the HPV type. The immunization helps protect against four types of HPV.

Endometriosis
Surgical approach involving the placement of a camera and various instruments through small incisions to allow access to the pelvis and abdomen. Operations performed through the laparoscope allow the advantage of shorter hospital stays, less postoperative pain, and a more rapid recovery period for the patient. Various procedures may be performed in this way including hysterectomy, treatment of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancies as well as the evaluation of pelvic pain or infertility.

There is no need to suffer, especially if the symptoms are affecting your relationships, sleep, nutrition or the bonding process with your newborn. Occasionally, postpartum depression is life-threatening and requires hospitalization. Talk with trusted family or friends, let them know how you are feeling and please call our office with any concerns. Do not wait for your 6-week postpartum check-up to call. A support group meets at Rex Hospital for women experiencing anxiety or depression related to childbirth and motherhood. Listed below are medications that you can safely use for minor symptoms and discomforts of pregnancy. In general, it is recommended that any unnecessary medications be avoided, especially in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Medications for chronic medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and seizure disorders should be continued until you can talk to your physician about them.

Ultrasound
Please contact our office when you discover that you are pregnant. You will be scheduled to meet with our prenatal nurse educator for a consultation. During this visit, your gynecologic and medical history will be reviewed extensively and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. You will have an ultrasound to establish the due date and viability of your pregnancy. You will also have routine laboratory studies drawn and meet with our financial counselor.
Radiology
Mammograms are an excellent tool for finding early-stage breast cancer with a resulting decrease in mortality. We recommend beginning annual mammograms at age 40 based on screening recommendations from the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, National Cancer Institute, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
Mammography
Digital mammography with computer-aided detection is one of the new technologies in the early detection of breast cancer. It has been shown to detect up to 28% more cancers than the routine mammogram in women 50 years old and younger, women in the perimenopausal state and women with particularly dense breast tissue. The images are collected in the same way as the previous method but the images are then stored on the computer which allows for better picture quality and evaluation by the radiologist.

The da Vinci Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy Surgery is an innovative surgery which is less invasive and offers numerous potential benefits over traditional open surgery. Additional information can be found at the da Vinci website.

Cyst
Lesions
Office procedure to treat certain types of cervix cell abnormalities. A special probe is used to freeze an area of the cervix, destroying the abnormal cells. It may be used to treat genital warts or other lesions as well. It is normal to experience mild cramping during the procedure, and afterwards, a thick vaginal discharge will be present for 2-4 weeks.
