The Rhode Island General Assembly established the organization as the Rhode Island State Dental Service Corporation. It became a Delta Dental plan in 1973. Delta Dental of Rhode Island is affiliated with the Delta Dental Plans Association. The association is a nonprofit organization, with some profit-based affiliates, that offers a system of dental health benefits for a range of employers both large and small throughout the United States.
