Preventive Care

Dental Care
Pets, like people, need routine dental care in order to maintain a healthy and pain-free mouth. All pets, old or young, need to be anesthetized for their teeth to be safely and effectively cleaned, charted, and x-rayed. Your pet will be continuously monitored while under anesthesia.
Vaccination
Comprehensive Examination
Healthy pets receive a physical exam every other day while boarding. Geriatric, diabetic or other pets with special needs will be examined once a day.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Dematting of heavily tangled coats, or substantial shedding out of undercoats may carry an additional charge. Scissor trims, styling, and flea and tick treatments are available upon request.

Anal Gland Infection Treatment
Our expanded facility was built with sanitation and safety being the top priorities. The bathing and grooming areas are joined by spacious, pass through dryers which have see-through doors so your pets can be monitored at all times. We perform routine bathing as well as professional grooming. Potomac Animal Hospital currently has two, full time professional groomers along with a full time bather. All grooming services include: bathing, nail trimming, outer ear cleaning and anal gland expression. Matted and older dogs may require special attention.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Heart Disease Treatment
If a fracture or diseased tooth is noted during the complete exam, often the recommendation will be to remove the damaged tooth. A diseased tooth is very painful to our pets, just as it is to us, and can lead to systemic diseases, such as an abscess, kidney disease, heart disease and liver disease. X-rays will be utilized to confirm complete extraction of diseased teeth.

Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Jason Scott, Dr. Michael Scott's youngest son, has been exposed to Veterinary Medicine all of his life, and actually began working at Potomac Animal Hospital when he was 13 years old. He completed his undergraduate and professional studies at Colorado State University graduating in 1999. His father, Dr. Michael Scott, who had graduated 30 years earlier to the day in 1969, hooded him during his graduation ceremony. His areas of interest include soft tissue surgery and internal medicine, and his practice philosophy centers around compassionate care and quality of life. Dr. Scott and his wife Kirsten, enjoy trying to keep up with their three children, Kildee, Indianola and Fletcher.
Laser Surgery
Our surgery services include anything from routine spays and neuters, mass removals, as well as emergency procedures. Surgeries are scheduled on Thursdays or on an as needed bases. We use laser surgery that has been proven to cause less pain, bleeding and swelling. What this means is that your pet will have a reduced risk of infection, more comfortable recovery, shorter hospital stays, and quicker return to normal activities.

General Pet Care

Boarding
Potomac Animal Hospital was established in 1973 as a large and small animal practice. Dr. Michael Scott joined the practice in 1979 and took over in December 1983. To keep up with changing demands, Dr. Scott gradually transitioned Potomac Animal Hospital into a state of the art small animal practice with grooming and boarding. Dr. Scott purchased the property and house adjacent to the hospital building in 1993 making way for plans to expand the hospital and build a boarding kennel. Finally, on November 3, 1997 we broke ground for the expansion and our first new boarders came on Thanksgiving in 1998.
Grooming
Ken graduated from The Maryland School of Dog Grooming right after high school and has been grooming ever since! He has been grooming with Potomac Animal Hospital for 29 years and grooming for a total of 38 years. He is an award winning groomer who has finished a number of champion dogs and worked with a few of the top dog breeders. He has previously shown and bred Bedlington Terriers. He especially loves grooming poodles. He truly loves his career as a dog groomer and has never wanted to do anything else.
