The teams at our two Wilkinson Eye Center locations are not simply pushing for you to come in for random checkups. It’s based on our knowledge that many eye conditions don’t exhibit any symptoms until they are already causing permanent damage to your vision. Glaucoma, for instance, builds the pressure inside your eye, but shows no symptoms until you begin to notice a decrease in your peripheral vision.
Ophthalmology
Dr. W. Scott Wilkinson is a third generation eye doctor (ophthalmologist) in one of the oldest medical practices in the State of Michigan. He began private practice in 1989. As one of the areas premier eye doctors, Dr. Wilkinson is board certified in ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision impairment in adults over the age of 60. The patient’s vision decreases as the macula deteriorates.
Laser Eye Surgery
Before the DSAEK procedure, the doctor may prescribe eye drops and antibiotics. Other pre-operative instructions may also be provided. These should be carefully followed. The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis using numbing medication and mild sedation. Patients experience little to no discomfort after the anesthetic eye drops are administered. The doctor uses sophisticated instruments that are similar to those used in LASIK procedures to access the endothelium of the cornea. They remove a select portion of the Descemet membrane and endothelium to eliminate the diseased or damaged area, then replace it with the donor corneal graft. The new corneal tissue is supported by an air bubble, which compresses the tissue against the rest of the cornea while it heals.
Cataracts
At Wilkinson Eye Center, we have extensive experience with the microsurgery used to remove the cataract-clouded natural lens and replace it with an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). There are many different IOLs to choose from. They all work well to restore your vision. Some IOLs are designed to help you be more spectacle independent. These are called premium lenses. Premium lenses cost more than standard lenses covered by most insurance plans.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is another of the comprehensive services offered to patients in the Clarkston and Pontiac area at Wilkinson Eye Center. W. Scott Wilkinson, M.D. performs cataract surgery weekly at TruVista Surgery Center in Troy. Dr. Wilkinson is a Board Certified ophthalmologist with specialty training in refractive and cataract surgery.

As the U.S. population continues to gain weight, an ominous side effect also grows — diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is now the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans.

Ultrasound
For these surgeries, we provide you with a light sedative and place numbing eyedrops in the eye with the cataract. Then Dr. Wilkinson makes a small incision in the front surface of the eye with a scalpel or laser. A circular hole is cut in the anterior capsule, the thin membrane that encloses the eye’s natural lens. The cataract-clouded lens is then broken up with ultrasound energy and the pieces are vacuumed away. One the entire lens is removed, it is replaced with an artificial replacement lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). There are a variety of technologically advanced IOLs to choose from, and Dr. Wilkinson will walk you through your options during your consultation.

Plastic Surgeons

Eyelid Surgery
The three main aspects of eyelid surgery recovery are swelling, bruising, and incision healing. It can take 2 to 3 weeks for bruising to resolve. Swelling can take up to 8 weeks for full resolution, and the incisions heal over several months. After a short time, incisions may turn from red to pink, and they gradually fade to an imperceptible flesh-tone from there on.
Blepharoplasty
Most cases of blepharoplasty are not covered by insurance. However, that is because most blepharoplasty procedures are performed for cosmetic reasons. If you suspect that you may be a good candidate for functional blepharoplasty, schedule a consultation with us. Your medical insurance company will likely have requirements that you must meet in order to qualify for coverage for at least part of your overall treatment plan. Typically, these requirements include sufficient documentation from an eye care professional. Here at Wilkinson Eye Center, we are thorough in our intake and examination for all eye problems, including excess tissue on the upper eyelids. We are familiar with cases like yours and are meticulous in our measurements and documentation related to your examination. If needed, we are happy to submit additional information to your insurance company to prove medical necessity.
