Preventive Care

Dental Care
Proper dental care is a vital part of preventative healthcare of horses. Filing of sharp edges, removing hooks, and aligning proper grinding of the teeth should be done at least annually.
Vaccination
Health certificates are required for shipping horses to another state (or country) and in most cases for simply crossing a state line. A health certificate is an official document, completed and signed by a veterinarian, attesting to the state of health of the described animal. The health certificate includes recent vaccination dates and coggins test information. The certificate will state that on the date noted, the animal was examined and found to be free of “signs of any infectious or contagious disease.” Some states require more extensive statements on the certificates accompanying the animals.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Reilly is certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) specializing in Equine Practice. ABVP Diplomate status is granted under the approval of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, an official committee of the American Veterinary Medical Association. While other veterinary specialties focus on specific disciplines or organ systems (e.g. ophthalmology, cardiology, etc.), ABVP diplomates demonstrate excellence in all areas of specialty care of the total patient. Currently there less than 100 veterinarians that are certified Equine ABVP diplomates in the Unites States. Dr. Reilly is the only ABVP certified equine private practitioner in New England.
Behavioral Counseling
Chinese herbal medicine plays an important role in the medical health care in China. There are a number of clinical studies that support the use of Chinese herbal medicines in treating a variety of medical disorders including gastrointestinal, respiratory, endocrinological, dermatological and cardiovascular problems. Often an herbal medicine is recommended to support the acupuncture therapy and may improve overall results of the acupuncture therapy. Herbal supplementation may be thought of as daily “mini acupuncture treatments”. In rare instances where a horse is so stagnant that they are too sensitive to treat with needles, an herbal may be prescribed for 1-2 weeks prior to the initial acupuncture treatment. Herbal medicines are also very effective at treating horses with phobias or behavioral problems.
Nutritional Counseling
Cribbing is a common vice in which horses grasp a solid object with their upper incisors, contract ventral neck muscles and arch their necks, retract their larynx and pull backward. Horses that swallow air during this maneuver are called “wind suckers”. Cribbing is considered an unsoundness, causing excessive wear on the incisors and enlargement of ventral neck muscles. Horses with aerophagia may exhibit weight loss, unthriftiness, poor performance, digestive disturbances, and flatulence.
Comprehensive Examination
The purpose of the health certificate is to reduce the chances of an infectious disease entering a state. The health certificate is not a guarantee of health, or for that matter a guarantee that the animal has no infectious disease, only that there was no sign of disease upon routine examination of the animal.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Internal parasites (worms) can cause extensive internal damage to your horse without you even realizing that your horses are infected. There are over 150 species of worms that can infect horses. The most important, in terms of health risk, are large and small strongyles, ascarids, and tapeworms.
Pain Management
ECSWT is currently the standard therapy (lithotripsy) for humans with urolithiasis, as well as gallstones, pancreatic stones, and salivary stones. Over the past ten years it has been applied in orthopedics in both veterinary and human medicine (plantar fasciitis, epicondylitis). The effects of ECSWT are not only disintegration of mineral deposits, but also pain relief, stimulation of bone remodeling (fractures of dorsal canon bone, active ringbone), and neovascularization of bone ligament interfaces (proximal suspensory desmitis, collateral ligament desmitis).

Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Dr. Reilly’s has spent the past 20 years working on competitive horses of all disciplines. His professional interests are pre-purchase evaluations, lameness/poor performance issues (feet/shoeing, cardiac issues, joint injuries, airway endoscopy, IRAP), reproduction (artificial insemination—fresh cooled and frozen semen, reproductive tract evaluations, and pregnancy/pre-natal issues), LASER surgery, respiratory disease, diagnostic imaging (x-rays, gastroscopy, ultrasonography, MRI), preventative health care, and internal medicine. He has been president of the Cape Cod Veterinary Medical Association, as well as chairman of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association Large Animal Committee. In addition, Dr. Reilly served many years on the AAEP Membership Development Committee.

Infection Treatment

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
As many of you have heard there have been confirmed cases of Strep. equi infections, otherwise known as Strangles, in the area. Simply stated, Strangles is a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract of horses with particular affinity for the guttural pouches, which are extensions of the auditory canal from the pharynx, or throat. It can cause signs of depression, fever, anorexia, swelling of the lymph nodes, edema or swelling of the legs and ventral abdomen, snotty nose and draining abscesses, most commonly from the submandibular area. Strangles is usually introduced to a farm by a horse who appears totally healthy, but is harboring the bacteria in his or her guttural pouches. These are known as “carriers”. The disease is then spread to other horses through shared water sources in a paddock, nose to nose contact, shared bits and tack, or through other fomites, such as hands and hoses. Arthritis Treatment
Distal tarsitis, often referred to as “bone spavin”, is the most common cause of clinical lameness associated with the tarsus (or “hock”) in horses. Distal tarsitis is an osteoarthritis and periostitis (inflammation) of the distal intertarsal, tarsometatarsal, and occasionally the proximal intertarsal joints. Distal tarsitis is a clinical diagnosis.

Kidney Disease Treatment
Before answering your question, let’s first review what the term “colic” means. The term “colic” refers to abdominal pain. Of course, abdominal pain can be a result of many things including kidney disease, peritonitis, and estrus (in mares). In horses, we typically use the term colic to describe pain associated with intestinal obstruction and/or distension. Obstruction can occur subsequent to impaction, displacement, torsion (twisting), entrapment, strangulation, and/or incarceration (trapping) of intestine(s). Regardless of the cause of obstruction, the inability of ingesta to move at a normal rate results in excessive gas production and fluid accumulation. This in turn causes intestinal distension and pain (colic).

Laser Surgery
LASER surgery has been widely accepted as a higher standard of care in human medicine for over 30 years. It presents a host of benefits over traditional surgery, and in many procedures, they can replace the scalpel entirely.
Spaying and Neutering
Cryptorchid castration requires general anesthesia and is therefore more involved than routine castration. The procedure, however, is relatively simple. By using the inguinal extension of the gubernaculum, the testicle can be retrieved without having to dilate the inguinal canal and increase the potential for herniation of bowel into the scrotum. Aftercare consists of one week of stall rest prior to resuming exercise.

Equine Vet
Twice annually we offer consultations on complicated cases with Dr. B.A. Rucker, an equine veterinarian and dental specialist. Dr. Rucker developed an interest in equine dentistry in the early 80’s and since then his US and international practice has been dedicated exclusively to equine dentistry. Dr. Rucker holds wet labs and contributes extensively to training equine veterinarians in performance dentistry. The doctors at South Shore Equine Clinic have trained under Dr. Rucker in the field of performance dentistry.
