Teeth Cleaning
It is very important that you continue to visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. If extra dental care is needed, we will be happy to coordinate with your family dentist to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.
Fluoride Treatment
Systemic fluorides are generally only used by your dentist and are not often available for at-home use. Systemic fluoride treatments are generally designed to help protect the oral health of children undergoing dental procedures. Fluoride used in the dentist/orthodontists office is often a much stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your dentist before purchasing professional strength fluoride).

Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.

After graduating from the College of Dentistry at Peking University, Dr. Chu practiced general dentistry in Beijing for several years before coming to the United States to attend the College of Dentistry at the Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, OH, where she received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Oral Biology. Dr. Chu was awarded the OSU Alumni Graduate Research Award upon her graduation. Her post-doctoral training at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX was focused on wound healing in diabetic conditions. She then moved back to OSU to study in the Department of Orthodontics at the College of Dentistry, where she received three years of extensive post-graduate training in orthodontics and performed molecular biology research on periodontal pathogens for her Master’s degree in Dentistry in 2001.
