This office utilizes a multitude of state-of-the-art physical therapy modalities to include ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, Class 4 Laser Therapy, soft tissue mobilization, massage therapy, and myofascial release. Hopkins Clinic is one of a few offices that also utilizes Decompression Traction for the cervical and lumbar spine. This safe and effective modality results in significantly improved function and decreased pain for disk herniations in the neck and lower back. These are all commonly called “passive” therapy as the patient is generally laying on a table or sitting in a chair and having the therapy performed on any body part.
MRI
By significantly reducing intradiscal pressure, Spinal Disc Decompression promotes retraction of the herniation into the disc and facilitates influx of oxygen, proline and other substrates. The promotion of fibro elastic activity stimulates repair and inhibits leakage of irritant sulphates and carboxylates from the nucleus. The most recent trial sought to correlate clinical success with MRI evidence of disc repair in the annulus, nucleus, facet joint and foramina as a result of treatment and found that reduction of disc herniation ranged between 10% and 90% depending on the number of sessions performed, while annulus patching and healing was evident in all cases.

Spinal Decompression Traction Therapy is designed to unload the spinal disc. Any back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by spinal Decompression Traction Therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or radiculopathy (pinched nerves).

Lesions
Although many conditions do not require diagnostic imaging, cases involving liability issues usually do. X-rays are not uncommonly used but do carry the risk of ionizing radiation. This is contraindicated in pregnancy. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) does not use radiation and gives much more information than x-ray. CT (computerized tomography) also uses ionizing radiation but is often used in hospital settings to rule out bleeding in the brain or abdomen or to rule out discrete bony fractures. Ultrasound is useful to image soft tissue lesions in the thyroid, abdomen and pelvis. PET scans (photon emission tomography) are used for specialty applications of brain injury and cancers.

“Active” therapy requires the participation of the patient. This type of therapy include specific strengthening and stabilization exercises, specific core training and assisted and active joint mobilization. Active Therapy is instituted after the patient’s initial complaints of pain and/or restricted range of motion is diminished and they are then able to participate in an active exercise program. One-on-one supervision by the physical therapist with the patient results in a quicker improvement and more effective resolution of the patient’s condition.
