Ultrasound
Arthroscopic surgery is not appropriate for patients with severe arthritis, but itâ€™s an exciting option for many patients who are too young to consider a total hip replacement procedure. The primary long-term solution for people with severe hip pain and arthritis is total hip replacement. Surgery-delaying tactics, such as ultrasound guided injection procedures and pain medications, have also been commonly used.
MRI
With an earlier diagnosis, patients may be candidates for a hip preservation procedure such as hip arthroscopy. The detailed history and dynamic examination of the patient is important in establishing the correct diagnosis in non-arthritic hip pain. Static radiographs have a limited reliability in determining the diagnosis of femoroacetabular impingement. Advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and CT help to clarify pathomechanics of hip pain, characterize bony deformity, determine the extent and pattern of cartilage and labral damage, and rule out other causes. The hip arthroscopy procedure offers an alternative for patients with persistent hip pain. Many patients are told they have "mild arthritis" and must wait until they are older for hip replacement.

Joint Replacement
Resurfacing is a bone tissue preserving procedure and an alternative to total knee joint replacement. Partial knee resurfacing or PKR is designed to relieve arthritis damage in one of the three compartments of the knee. The three compartments of the knee are the medial (inside) compartment, the lateral (outside) compartment and the patellofemoral (kneecap) compartment. Based on the location of your knee arthritis, partial knee resurfacing may be an option for you.

Hip Replacement
Hip resurfacing may be an alternative to total hip replacement for certain patients. Patients with advanced hip arthritis may be candidates for either traditional total hip replacement (arthroplasty) or hip resurfacing (hip resurfacing arthroplasty). Both procedures are types of hip replacement, but there are key differences. Your orthopaedic surgeon will discuss your options and recommend the procedure that is best for your condition.
Knee Replacement
PKR only replaces the damaged surface of the knee joint. This helps minimize trauma to the healthy tissues. Your orthopaedic surgeon removes only damaged bone and fits the implant to that bone. PKR artificial joints are smaller than total knee implants, and your surgical incision may be smaller as well. We leave most of the knee joint unaffected and basic knee structure stays intact. Your post-surgical pain may be eased and your recovery may be shorter than what you might experience with a total knee replacement.
Knee Arthroscopy
We use arthroscopy to diagnose and treat a wide range of knee problems. During a knee arthroscopy we insert an arthroscope with its small camera into your knee joint. Using the camera to display images from inside your knee joint on a video monitor, we guide the arthroscopeâ€™s miniature surgical instruments. The arthroscope and instruments are thin enough to allow very small incisions rather than the large incision necessary for traditional open surgery.
