Veneers
Cosmetic dentists restore the damage to teeth caused by clenching and grinding by placing crowns and veneers, but clenching and grinding is a result of neuromuscular instability that results from cranial base problems, which need to be resolved through ALF Appliance Therapy first. Cosmetic dentistry will crack and chip eventually as the natural teeth did before them, since the craniomandibular relationship has not been corrected effectively. The cosmetic patient is given a night guard appliance to reduce the damage.
Crowns
Since the teeth, jaw joints, and muscles can all be involved, treatment for this condition varies with the specific problems you have. Treatment will involve several phases. The first goal is to relieve the muscle spasm and pain, and restore the dislocated disc with in the jaw joint to its normal anatomical position. Then, your dentist must correct the way the teeth fit together. Often a temporary device (known as an orthotic, or “splint”) is worn over the lower teeth until the jaw joint is stabilized. Dr. Griffiths typically uses various types of splints that are comfortably worn and not visible to an observer in the first stage of your treatment. Once the jaw joint are fixed your treatment advances into the second stage of bite correction so the splint will no linger have to be worn. Permanent correction of your bite may involve selective re-shaping of the teeth, building crowns on the teeth, orthodontics, or a permanent appliance to lay over the teeth. If the jaw joint itself is damaged, it must be specifically treated. Though infrequent, surgery is sometimes required to correct a damaged joint. Ultimately, your specialist will stabilize your bite so that the teeth, muscles, and joints all work together without strain. The important aim of correcting your bite is to insure optimal long-term health. If you have any of the signs or symptoms mentioned, discuss them with your dentist. TMD can be caused by many things. Some of the more common things are malocclusions or problems in the way the teeth fit together, a blow to the jaw or head, clenching or grinding of the teeth, arthritis of the jaw, poorly fitting dentures, yawning for prolonged periods with the mouth open too wide, chewing gum, recent dental work, accidents that damage facial bones or the jaw, extraction of teeth or missing back teeth, birth trauma due to delivery complications, and traction involving the head, jaws, and neck.

The problem may be one of opportunity missed with respect to growth and development. It’s useful to view treatment opportunities in three phases: early, on time, or too late. While patients can be treated at any age, those with available growth may enjoy a substantial advantage. For some patients, early treatment may prevent the need for jaw surgery, extraction of permanent teeth, or fracture of protruded incisors. Early treatment may also aid in psychological development that is appearance-related. Most harmful oral habits respond best to early treatment. A patient referred in the mixed dentition may also benefit from space management and guidance of eruption.

The objective of contemporary orthodontics is a well-proportioned face as well as an esthetic and stable dentition. For that reason, the orthodontist must evaluate the dental arches and face in three dimensions of space: transverse, anterior-posterior, and vertical. It is often through facial orthopedics that the orthodontist is able to achieve a treatment result with jaws in proportion to each other and to the rest of the face.
Braces
Teeth and the alveolar bone in which they are contained are only one part of the complex skeletal system that influences the functioning of the neuromuscular system. The neuromuscular system produces the responsive symptomology for chronic pain (or painless) dysfunctional patients. Patients who suffer from head, neck, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction and/or pain benefit greatly from ALF Appliance Therapy. ALF Appliance Therapy can be used also to straighten teeth instead of, or in addition to, using braces and is most effective at “lifting” the soft tissues of the face and neck.

Cosmetic Dentistry
ALF Appliance Therapy involves the correction of skeletal (cranial base) and cervical spine discrepancies that are the root causes of head, face, and mouth pain; temporomandibular joint disorders; un-esthetic facial issues; dental compensations (whether these are represented by crowded teeth, cracked and worn teeth, recession of soft tissue and notching (abfraction) of the enamel, etc.); and often, most of the patients’ supposedly unrelated neurophysiological systemic symptoms. Cosmetic dentistry is incorporated into ALF Therapy by this doctor as an integral part of ALF Therapy because ongoing therapeutic results and case stability relies on the teeth, as well as the bones, being their ideal sizes, shapes, and in the correct positions as needed for each individual patient. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) therapy is also a part of ALF Therapy because the achieved correction of the alignments of the cranial bones, specifically the occipital, sphenoid, temporal, maxillae, and ethmoid bones, and the mandible restores optimum function to the temporomandibular joints in most cases. Facial aesthetics and overall body posture improve drastically, due to the effects of balancing the cranial bones with respect to each other, the mandible, and the cervical spine. The pelvis reacts to the balancing of the temporal bones. Sinus and venous drainages improve, which adds vast improvement to the quality and tone of the skin on the face, as noticed by some of my patients’ aestheticians at facial appointments subsequent to beginning ALF Therapy.
