When you smile, do people see more gum than teeth? Many patients have concerns about their “gummy smile,” which leaves some teeth covered by too much gum and makes the teeth look too short. This can be corrected by a procedure known as crown lengthening.
Bridges
Multiple published studies have shown that virtually every other form of tooth replacement has a finite life, and requires replacement on a regular basis. For instance, caps or crowns and bridges represent short term solutions to tooth loss, and need to be replaced every 5-7 years. Every time a crown is replaced it causes additional loss of tooth and gum tissue, a potential need for root canal treatment and / or periodontal therapy.

Root Canal Treatment
When compared to routine dental procedures like fillings, cleanings, extractions, and root canals, dental implants seem expensive. But unlike conventional methods of tooth replacement, the right dental implant can last a lifetime!

Periodontal Surgery
In certain situations non-surgical gum disease treatment is not entirely successful in preventing the destructive advances of periodontal disease. In such situations in which it is impossible to completely disinfect the pockets or infected crevices between the gum and the tooth, and where even the most rigorous personal oral hygiene procedures are insufficient to adequately eliminate the disease associated bacteria, periodontal surgery, sometimes known as pocket elimination, may be necessary to reverse the process. The benefits of these surgical procedures are that they are designed to eliminate infected pockets, and to restore or stimulate the natural regeneration of diseased tissues. Dr. Brown, in consultation with you and your family dentist, will assist you to decide on the best course of action.

Tooth Extractions
Depending on the condition of your teeth, you may be cleared for dental implants right away. Some patients, however, might need to undergo other procedures before they can receive implants. If you have a soft jawbone, cracked teeth or a decaying tooth, you may need a tooth extraction or bone graft first. Tooth extractions can usually be performed on the same day as the implant installation. Bone grafts, on the other hand, may require a separate appointment.
