Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is the most commonly reported cause of heel discomfort. This condition targets the plantar fascia, which is a broad ligament that extends from the heel to toes. When it is overused, such as from running for long periods of time, tiny tears can result. This leads to irritation and inflammation and ultimately causes heel pain. The discomfort is more intense in the early morning, but can gradually subside as the day progresses due to the warming and stretching effects on the fascia. Problems with the foot's structure, such as flat feet or high arches, can contribute to plantar fasciitis, but its most common cause is repetitive use. It also can result from prolonged standing or wearing unsupportive footwear. Performing certain stretching exercises, refraining from walking barefoot, wearing appropriate footwear, and periodically resting the feet can help to alleviate the pain. An effective simple morning exercise involves flexing the foot ten times before getting out of bed, or after sitting for an extended period of time. In cases of persistent pain, custom orthotics for cushioning and night splints may be introduced. In more extreme scenarios, corticosteroid injections can offer pain relief. Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

He then continued to receive his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in Manhattan in 2001. His postgraduate training followed with a residency in foot and ankle surgery at Passaic Beth Israel Regional Medical Center in Passaic, NJ where he served as Chief Podiatric Surgical Resident.

Cuboid syndrome is a frequent cause of lateral foot pain, primarily affecting the outer side of the foot. Athletes like ballet dancers and runners are often affected, with the condition resulting from the partial dislocation of the cuboid bone. This dislocation can occur suddenly due to injuries like ankle sprains or develop gradually from repetitive stress on the bone. Cuboid syndrome is characterized by the cuboid bone acting as a block, restricting the movement of surrounding foot bones. Three primary causes of cuboid syndrome include ankle injuries, repetitive strain, and altered foot biomechanics, often associated with flat feet. Symptoms encompass lateral foot pain, worsened with activity, difficulty walking, tenderness, swelling, and weakness during activities like walking, running, and jumping. Diagnosis is often challenging, and this condition can be misdiagnosed. Imaging studies may not reveal cuboid dislocation, but a physical examination involving palpation and specific tests can help identify the condition. Treatment options involve exercises to improve mobility, strength, and stability, as well as rest. A podiatrist can also manipulate and reposition the cuboid, tape it for support, prescribe orthotics, or recommend cuboid wedges to correct foot positioning. If you have lateral foot pain, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to obtain an accurate diagnosis and treatment that is right for you.

This can lead to tingling or a painful sensation, and it may also cause you to lose feeling in your feet. The loss of feeling in your feet can become incredibly dangerous, especially if you can longer sense a blister or cut on your foot; this can lead to sores or infections.

Fungal infections occur due to fungus getting through the cracks of the toes or cuts in your skin. Common signs that you may have a fungal infection include thicker than normal toenails, oddly shaped toenails, discoloration, a yellowish hue to the nail, and separation of the nail and nail bed. Fungal infections can affect anyone but are most common among men, those with diabetes or athlete’s foot, and smokers. The risk of having toenail fungus also increases as you age, if another family member has it, and if you have a weaker immune system.

Hammertoe is a characterized by one or more of the toes having a bend in the middle joint. This occurs because of weakening of the muscle due to poorly fitted shoes or a genetically inherited trait.

A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

Treatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.
