Alexander Schwartz, M.D. Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his Internship and Residency in General Surgery at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Centers in New York. Dr. Schwartz continued his training at New York Medical College where he completed his Residency in Urology in addition to being Chief Resident there. IBS is sometimes confused with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but the two are quite different. Doctors classify IBS as a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning normal bowel function is affected. In contrast, IBD is a group of diseases (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) that cause chronic inflammation in the intestines. IBD, unlike IBS, can be detected on a colonoscopy or imaging test and can require surgery. IBS is not a cause of IBD and having IBS does not put patients at greater risk of developing IBD.

Samantha Rosenzweig, DPM Dr. Rosenzweig graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. She then went on to complete her podiatric surgical Residency with an added credential in reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Prior to joining Bergen Medical Associates, she spent some time in private practice in upstate New York. Dr. Rosenzweig believes that most foot problems can be treated non-surgically, however, she does specialize in surgical management of forefoot deformities especially arthritis of the big toe. She also takes a special interest in Diabetic foot care including wound management, sports medicine, and pediatric foot conditions. Dr. Rosenzweig is a former collegiate athlete who still competes locally in multiple soccer leagues and has completed several half marathons and century cycling rides. Dr. Rosenzweig is Board Certified in Podiatric Medicine.

Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are minute deposits of calcium or other trace minerals in the body that combine with salts. As kidney stones grow, they may stay in the kidneys or pass into the ureter, which can cause significant discomfort. They are diagnosed via ultrasound or CT scans. Treatment can include waiting for the stone to exit the body on its own or with medication. Several types of surgeries, from non-invasive to mildly invasive can also be used to treat kidney stones.

Rectal cancer is a disease in which cancer cells develop in the rectum, which is the last six inches of the large intestine. The rectum begins at the end of the final segment of the colon and ends when it reaches the short, narrow passage leading to the anus. Cancer inside the rectum (rectal cancer) and cancer inside the colon (colon cancer) are often referred to together as colorectal cancer. The reason is both types of cancers share many characteristics. However, key differences make them unique.
Endoscopy
Gastroenterologists examine the tissue of the esophagus through upper endoscopy, a procedure that provides images of the area. A biopsy also may be used to determine whether Barrett’s esophagus is present. Physicians use a thin, flexible tube to examine the lining of the esophagus and stomach. A small camera attached to the tube provides images. If necessary, a small sample, or biopsy, of the tissue is taken for examination in the laboratory by a qualified pathologist. Screening for Barrett’s esophagus is recommended for patients who experience chronic acid reflux symptoms.

A urologist can more conclusively diagnose a UTI through a urinalysis where blood or white blood cells may be present. A computerized tomography (CT) scan or ultrasound may also be necessary for diagnosis. Treatment is generally complete after three days of antibiotics though sometimes the course of antibiotics may take up to two weeks.

There are four types of thyroid cancer, which is irregular cell growth in the thyroid gland that sits at the base of the neck. This endocrine gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, or how the body uses food and energy in addition to the body’s temperature. The most common form of thyroid cancer is papillary, highly treatable and slow-growing.

Ultrasound
Unlike X-rays, ultrasounds do not use any radiation to generate images. Instead, they utilize sound waves to create images of different body structures. Patients can schedule onsite ultrasound appointments for routine imaging tests. Ultrasounds are used to monitor pregnancy but can also serve as diagnostic tests for checking the heart, gallbladder, kidneys, and thyroid. Ultrasound is only available at the Emerson, Montvale, and Paramus locations.

At your appointment with a medical practitioner at Bergen Medical Associates, we will carefully examine your medical history and ask targeted questions about your abdominal pain and other symptoms. Further testing may be required to determine the cause of the stomach pain. These tests include blood tests, x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and similar modalities.
Chemotherapy
Colorectal cancer is graded from Stage 0 to IV, depending on severity. A Stage 0 diagnosis, in which cancer has not spread beyond the lining of the colon, can be treated with a polypectomy to remove lesions. More advanced stages of cancer may require a surgical procedure called a colectomy in which the cancerous portion of the colon is removed. Some patients will receive chemotherapy or radiation in addition to surgery.
