Many infections and chronic diseases occur in conjunction with anemia. Anemias that occur along with a chronic disease are relatively common, and probably result from a combination of factors, including a decrease in the ability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, a shortened red blood cell life span, and impaired iron utilization. Examples of causative disease include endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart that usually involves the heart valves), osteomyelitis (inflammation of the bones), juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.
Medical Weight Loss
Constipation is infrequent, or irregular, bowel movements in which feces are hard and dry. Although most people have one bowel movement a day, as many as three movements a day, or as few as three a week, are considered normal. Regularity and ease of defecation are more important than frequency. Dr. Klin recommends that anyone who experiences constipation, after years of regularity, should seek medical help. This is especially important when constipation is accompanied by other symptoms such as weight loss, abdominal pain, or rectal bleeding.
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy allows us to examine the lining of the entire large intestine and often par of the small intestine, called the terminal ileum. This examination is performed by inserting a flexible tube, about the thickness of your finger, into the anus and slowly advancing the tube into the end of the large intestine, called the cecum.
Constipation
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS is a condition characterized by any combination of symptoms, including abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation, with no clear cause. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation. In addition to pain, indigestion, and bloating, there may be excessive gas, nausea, abdominal distension, rumbling and gurgling, temporarily relief of pain after passing gas or feces, mucus in the feces, and a feeling that the bowel is not emptying completely. Symptoms can be aggravated by anxiety. IBS, the most common disorder of the digestive tract, is not a chemical disease, or due to a structural defect. It is a functional disorder that affects the muscles of the intestines and can be brought on, or aggravated by, emotional stress. Evidence suggests that increased responsiveness of the nervous system to normal stimuli is part of the cause. Food intolerance is another contributing factor. IBS is twice as common in women as in men and usually begins in early adulthood.

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder, which means it is caused by a malfunction in the body’s own immune system. It can be an inherited disorder, meaning that it runs in families. The disease can occur at any age and can be triggered by a stressful event, such as surgery, an infection, pregnancy or childbirth, or severe emotional stress. (Breast feeding appears to offer protection against the disease.) In addition, the age at which an individual begins to eat foods that contain gluten (such as baby cereal) may also be a factor.

Dr. Mariusz J. Klin graduated from the Silesian School of Medicine in Katowice, Poland in 1984. Dr. Klin finished his Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology fellowship. During his Internal Medicine training, he obtained a PhD in the field of Medicine/Pharmacology. Dr. Klin held an Assistant Professor position at the Silesian School of Medicine and received several teaching awards and scientific awards.
Colon Cancer
Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia. It is estimated to occur in one out of five nonpregnant women of childbearing age, in one out of two pregnant women, and in three out of 100 men. The principal causes of the disease are inadequate iron in the diet, insufficient iron absorption during digestion, and abnormal blood loss. Women are particularly prone to developing the disease because of blood loss during menstruation. Pregnancy is also associated with iron deficiency since the mother is producing blood cells for the fetus as well as for herself. Lactation also increases the need for iron, which is a component of breast milk. In women after menopause and in men, the most likely cause of iron deficiency anemia is blood loss in the digestive tract from conditions such as ulcers, colon polyps, or colon cancer or the use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen. In children, lead poisoning can interfere with iron utilization and cause anemia. Children and adolescents sometimes become iron deficient during periods of accelerated growth, when demand for iron exceeds intake. Vegetarians, who eat no animal products (vegans) for a period of several years, have an increased likelihood of developing iron deficiency anemia.

Constipation occurs when colon muscles fail to contract and propel stools forward as normal. The colon continues to absorb water from stools, making them hard and dry, and more difficult to pass. Primary causes usually include not eating enough fiber or drinking enough fluids. Repeatedly ignoring the urge to defecate can also be a factor. Other causes include the overuse of laxatives, physical inactivity, the use of certain medications (such as antacids, iron, or codeine), hemorrhoids, an anal fissure, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, or hypothyroidism. In some cases, the abrupt onset of constipation is a symptom of colon cancer.

Ultrasound
Dr. Klin will need to do a physical examination and perhaps other tests, such as blood samples, X-rays, ultrasound scanning, CT (computed tomography) scanning, and Endoscopy (a procedure in which interior parts of the body are examined by using a slim, flexible, lighted tube).
MRI
In diagnosing a fatty liver, the physician will first eliminate the other possible causes of chronic liver disease, especially alcohol abuse. Images of the liver obtained by an ultrasound test, a computer tomographer (CT) scan, or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, can suggest the presence of a fatty liver. A CT scan will show a liver that is less dense than normal.

The symptoms of IBS are similar to those of many other gastrointestinal disorders. A sudden change in bowel habits after years of regularity can be a symptom of IBS, or of a serious digestive disorder, such as colon cancer. As a result, the diagnosis of IBS is made by eliminating other possible causes of symptoms. Dr. Klin typically orders a number of tests to rule out other underlying problems. Tests may include imaging procedures, such as ultrasound or CT (computed tomography) scanning, sigmoidoscopy (a procedure in which the rectum and sigmoid colon are examined using a slim, flexible, lighted tube inserted through the anus), barium x-rays of the gastrointestinal tract, and a stool analysis. When chronic symptoms include abdominal discomfort, problems with passing stools, and emotional stress, and tests do not reveal the presence of any other disease, the diagnosis is most likely IBS.
Chemotherapy
This blood disorder is characterized by larger than normal red blood cells. Abnormal precursors of red blood cells, called megaloblasts (from the Greek root meaning "big cell buds") occur in bone marrow and give this anemia its name. Megaloblastic anemia commonly results from a deficiency in Vitamin B12 or folic acid (also known as folate). It can also be caused by leukemia, multiple myeloma, certain hereditary disorders, and some chemotherapy agents. The most common type of megaloblastic anemia is pernicious anemia.

The most common symptom of colitis is blood in the feces. An attack of diarrhea that contains blood and pus is a typical sign of colitis. Other symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, fever, and weight loss. An anal fissure (a tear or ulcer in the lining of the anal canal), an anal fistula (an abnormal channel between the anal canal and a hole in the skin surrounding the anus), or an abscess in the anal canal can also develop.
