Established in 1857, the Omaha Police Department provides professional law enforcement services and protection. Its citizen police academy is a 10-week program that provides instruction on several topics, including the chaplain s program, defensive tactics, domestic violence, K-9 and mounted patrol, metro unit, and firearms and officer safety. The department s crime prevention unit sponsors a neighborhood watch program that unites neighbors and furnishes them with information on how to effectively reduce crime in their neighborhoods. It also sponsors the Explorer Post program, which provides opportunities for young people to obtain the knowledge and experience of a career in law enforcement. The Omaha Police Department provides training to explorer program members in various aspects of law enforcement, including traffic and crowd control. It is located in Omaha, Neb.
