Dental Care
Have you ever “flipped the lip” to see and examine your pet’s teeth? At Oak Park Animal Hospital we will teach you how to “flip the lip” and grade your pet’s teeth. We all know how important dental and oral hygiene are in humans, but what about our pets? The truth of the matter is that our pets need dental care as well!
Vaccination
After the first visit and your pet's initial vaccinations, you should plan on getting your pet checked by the vet twice a year. You may need to go more frequently if the vet is clipping your pet's nails.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Nutritional Counseling
Eventually, you will be able to remove the screen between the two rooms. Expect some stress at first. One or both cats may hide for a while. Keep a close watch on both cats. The goal is for them to either engage playfully and comfortably with each other or to ignore each other. If there are any signs of aggression, get between the cats and separate them. Then help them through baby steps until they get comfortable with each otherâ€™s presence. During this transition period, watch for signs of stress or territorialism, such as one cat harassing the other, soiling outside the litterbox, withdrawing, loss of appetite, constipation or any other irregularities. This may mean that you are going to fast and you need to take a step or two back and give your cats more time to adjust to each other.
Comprehensive Examination
All exotic pets must be current on an annual examination performed by one of our veterinarians and a fecal screening. Since there are so many different housing requirements for each type of exotic pet, we ask that you bring your exotic pet in their housing. This not only ensures that we can care for your pet with the proper environment, but it will also decrease their stress level since their habitat has not been altered. Please also bring their personalized food with instructions for their feeding care.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Fleas and Ticks. Fleas are external parasites that cause a skin allergy, a common skin disease for dogs and cats. Ticks latch onto the skin and burrow in to feed on blood. Both can be itching, annoying and unhealthy for your cat. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms. If there are fleas on you cat, that means there are fleas in you house. You will need to use a flea bomb or other premise-control device to rid your house of the fleas. Be sure that any sprays or treatments you use are safe for your cat. Keeping your cat flea and tick free is done by using products that can be applied once a month. However, you need to visually inspect your cat's skin for signs of fleas during daily grooming and check for ticks after returning from an area known to have them, like wooded camping sites.
Pain Management
At Oak Park Animal Hospital we offer full service surgery capabilities with the most advanced anesthetics, monitoring, nursing care and pain management. Surgery involves the treatment and prevention of disease, injury or deformity by operation or tissue manipulation. Our end goal result is to improve the quality of life for both you and your pet. All surgical procedures involve some form of anesthesia and pain control. We will always discuss the overall surgical and pain management plan with you up front and will tailor the plan to your pet.

Leptospirosis Treatment
A basic vaccination series should be a part of your pet's schedule during the first four months of life. It protects your pet from infections and illnesses, including Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Corona Virus, Canine Influenza, Lyme Disease, Bordetella (kennel cough), and Parainfluenza. If you acquired a pet that is older than four months and that has not been vaccinated, the vet will use a different protocol.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment

Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Currently, there is a vaccine for feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a fatal disease among cats. This disease can be transmitted from a mother at birth to her kittens or through a bite from another cat. Outdoor cats can be carriers, so do not mix any outdoor cats with indoor cats. There is no vaccination currently for FIV, which can also be fatal. All outdoor cats should get the FeLV vaccination. During your cat's annual check-up, be sure to talk to the vet about any new vaccinations.

A urine analysis is a helpful diagnostic test. Using a small amount of urine our veterinarians can assess kidney function, or see if there is evidence of urinary crystal formation, urinary tract infections or diabetes. Often a urine analysis is done along with a CBC/Chemistry panel to get an overall picture of your pet’s health.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Hip dysplasia, which makes it difficult or uncomfortable for your dog to walk or run. Solutions range from medication to surgery, depending on the severity.
Diabetes Treatment
Thyroid Disease Treatment
Hypothyroidism, which can slow your dog down and lead to obesity and poor heart health. Your vet can check on this with a simple blood test and it is easy to manage with medication.
Heart Disease Treatment
Starting around age 7, your pet will enter into their senior years. As pets, they often start to develop the same diseases as human seniors do such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, endocrine disease and cancer. Early detection and prevention of these diseases can minimize unnecessary suffering.
Kidney Disease Treatment
A blood chemistry panel allows the veterinarian to assess your pet’s internal organs and metabolic health. It screens for liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, electrolyte disorders and much more. Often, depending on if it is indicated, other panels such as a thyroid panel may be included.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
By the time most cats and dogs reach 2 years old, dental plaque has started to mineralize and adhere to their teeth as tartar. This same plaque and tartar starts to build up under the gum line which combined with bacteria will begin to infect the gums causing gingivitis and bad breath. This will ultimately lead to periodontal disease and teeth extractions if not treated.

Spaying and Neutering
Most pet owners don’t breed captive reptiles and amphibians. However, spaying or neutering could have a negative effect on these animals’ endocrine systems. Generally, unless an animal is experiencing a health-related problem associated with reproductive organs, spaying and neutering are not necessary procedures. However, if you do expect to breed your pet, be sure to read about the specific courting behaviors, reproductive processes, and infant care for your species.

Laboratory Services
When your pet is not feeling well, it is often challenging for the veterinarian to determine the underlying cause without doing some diagnostic testing. Diagnostic testing can include services such as blood work, urine analysis, radiographs (X-rays), ultrasound and cytology. X-Ray
Radiography or “X-rays” allow our veterinarians to view the internal structures of your pet. The radiographs are used to visualize the bones, lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder and digestive tract. Microchipping
Microchip Identification Year after year, animals go missing and are never found again. Microchipping your pet is a safe, effective way to avoid this from happening in your household. A microchip is a small electronic device that is about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted between the shoulder blades, under your pet’s skin, and remains there for the life of your pet.
