Teeth Cleaning
If you have not had a professional teeth cleaning in some time, plaque and tartar can build up, causing chronic inflammation of the gums. Many people stop flossing believing that they are causing the bleeding by flossing, however, it is the lack of proper hygiene and flossing that causes the bleeding. Therefore, it is recommended to increase flossing and see a dental hygienist immediately to remove the hardened tartar that can not be otherwise cleaned.
Dental Sealants
A sealant is a plastic material that is placed on the biting surface of permanent molars to prevent decay from entering the grooves. They should last 5-10 years, but do not protect between the teeth.

Fillings
Dentists who have obtained SMART certification from the IAOMT have completed coursework related to mercury and the safe removal of amalgam fillings, including two units consisting of scientific readings, online learning videos, and tests. The educational programming includes learning about the application of the rigorous safety measures, including the utilization of specific equipment. Our office utilizes charcoal masks, special high speed suctions and a dental mercury vapor and oral aerosol vacuum system (DentAir Vac) to comply with IAOMT recommendations for the safe removal of amalgam fillings.
Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or composite placed over the front of a tooth, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface. A composite veneer is done by the dentist in one visit. This procedure costs less, but may not be as permanent as a porcelain veneer. Composite can stain over time requiring another veneer be placed. In contrast, a porcelain veneer is prepared chairside and then an impression is made and sent to a laboratory. Porcelain is more durable and resistant to stain and color change.
Crowns
There are several choices for crowns. A gold crown is usually placed on a posterior tooth. Gold is softer than porcelain and is the best choice for a back tooth where most of the chewing force occurs. However, many people do not like the look, therefore a porcelain crown can be used, but it must be understood that over time the porcelain may wear and reveal the metal underneath.
Bridges
When a tooth is missing or needs to be removed there are several options for replacement. The most conservative option is to have a flipper made. This is a removable device with a tooth attached that covers the palate for an upper tooth or sits on the ridge for a lower tooth. Many people do not like the removable aspect or the fact that it covers a large portion of the mouth. An implant is the best option since it does not require manipulation of the adjacent teeth, however it is a long process and can be expensive. A fixed bridge is another viable option that requires removing tooth structure from the teeth adjacent to the space in order to fit crowns over them. This is a good option but can be expensive. I have found another option that works especially well for front teeth. Instead of removing large amounts of tooth structure from the adjacent teeth, I remove a small slot on the back side of the teeth and fit a small fiber across the space. I then build up a tooth from resin material and bond it to the fiber. This is a conservative fixed bridge which works very well.
Dental Bonding

Root Canal Treatment
Pain that occurs spontaneously, throbs and can only be managed with pain medication is an indication of deeper involvement of the nerve of the tooth. Once decay reaches deep into the tooth, the nerve becomes inflamed and can no longer be healed by removing decay and placing a filling. Teeth with this response will need to have root canal treatment or removal to eradicate the pain. Antibiotics and pain medication can only temporarily quell the discomfort and are not the recommended treatment.

Deep Cleaning
If there is evidence of bone loss, significant bleeding or much tartar, then we will treatment plan a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) which will be done at the next visit.

Dentures
There are complete and partial dentures that can be used to replace missing teeth. Dentures are the most cost effective manner to replace teeth, however they are removable and require multiple adjustments.

Dental Implants
Implants are fast becoming the option of choice to replace missing teeth. They are fixed in place and as opposed to bridges, adjacent teeth do not have to be touched. Another advantage, is that according to studies, they can last 30 plus years. The best place for an implant is the lower jaw because the bone is dense and fuses well to the titanium implant. In the upper jaw, if the sinus is large, a sinus lift may need to be performed to provide more bone for the implant. These decisions are made on an individual basis with input from both your general dentist and the surgeon placing the implant.

Braces
The bite of a child can determine whether or not the child will need braces. It is normal and healthy for the child to have large spaces between the front teeth. This ensures that there is plenty of room for the larger permanent teeth to grow in. If the child has a crossbite or extreme crowding, they will be referred to an orthodontist for early intervention. By catching these problems early, the later course of braces can be abbreviated.
