Pediatric Care
The World Health Organization recommends that women exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first 6 months of life to achieve optimal growth, development, and health. A review of evidence has shown that, on a population basis, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is the optimal way of feeding infants. After that, infants should receive complementary foods with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that infants be exclusively breastfed for about the first 6 months with continued breastfeeding along with introducing appropriate complementary foods for 1 year or longer, as mutually desired by mother and infant. According to Dr. Ruth Peterson, director of CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity, “ Breastfeeding provides unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers. It is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition, with breast milk uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby. We must do more to create supportive and safe environments for mothers who choose to breastfeed.” On the other hand, mothers who do not breastfeed their infants for many different reasons also need to be supported.
Primary Care

Ear Infections
Breastfeeding provides benefits for both infants and mothers. Breastfeeding helps protect a baby from many illnesses. Breastfed infants have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, acute ear infections, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe lower respiratory disease. Mothers who breastfeed their infants have a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Endometriosis
According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, Endometriosis is a common health problem for women affecting more than 6 1/2 million women in the United States. The Newton-Wellesley OB/GYN team is very experienced in diagnosing and treating endometriosis and offers effective treatments and testing methods, including transvaginal ultrasounds, pelvic laparoscopies, and pelvic exams. Pelvic Pain
A hysterectomy can help women find permanent relief from a variety of medical conditions, including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, abnormal vaginal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries, and others.

Ovarian Cancer
Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are required to pay for both genetic counseling and breast and gynecological cancer testing (e.g., Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) testing) for women who meet certain criteria. For these patients, insurance companies must cover the entire cost of genetic counseling and breast and gynecological cancer testing with no out-of-pocket costs to the individual.

Cervical cancer starts in the cervix, where the vagina connects to the lower part of the uterus. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 12,000 women every year in the United States receive a cervical cancer diagnosis.

Discomfort during sexual activity – If you experience any pain, vaginal itching, or burning sensations during sexual activity, you should see your doctor. These symptoms of discomfort could be signs of a urinary tract infection, bacterial or yeast infections, or something else entirely. Getting yourself checked and treated will ensure good health and eliminate any discomfort during sexual activity.

During the exam, your women’s health specialist examines your reproductive organs, performs a Pap smear, offers tests for sexually transmitted diseases, conducts a breast exam, and can discuss your contraceptive options. Ultrasound
The use of ultrasonography in medicine allows your physician to see inside your body to confirm early pregnancy, assess the health of your reproductive organs, and track the growth of your baby. An ultrasound is also used in other medical disciplines besides OB/GYN to detect health conditions or to make a diagnosis.
MRI
MRI – a magnetic resonance imaging scan uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of the uterus and surrounding organs.

Your women’s health specialist may recommend other treatment options, such as radiation or chemotherapy, as well as medications to relieve associated pain.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is an alternative surgical approach to open surgery where small skin incisions (less than one inch) and specialized tools are used to perform gynecologic surgery.
Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a surgery that removes female reproductive organs. For some women, a hysterectomy is the right treatment option to help find lasting relief for several medical conditions.
Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that your OB/GYN may recommend as a treatment for menorrhagia. Menorrhagia is the medical term for menstrual bleeding that lasts more than 7 days. It can also be bleeding, which is very heavy. Untreated heavy or prolonged bleeding can significantly reduce the quality of your life and cause a host of uncomfortable symptoms, including anemia (iron deficiency).
Laparoscopy
For a laparoscopy, the doctor uses a small telescope through small abdominal skin incisions to evaluate the pelvic anatomy (uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes). In using a laparoscope (camera) where live pictures are sent to a video monitor, the doctor can visualize the anatomy to diagnose conditions, remove tissue, or repair problems in your reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes).

Plastic Surgeons

Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure–it is an alternative to open surgery. It involves a surgical technique of small incisions in the abdomen that are usually smaller than one inch. Through these incisions, your physician can use a tiny instrument called a laparoscope—along with other tools—to diagnose conditions, remove tissue, or repair problems in your reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes).

Heated Fluid. A hysteroscope is used to pump heated fluid into the uterus and circulate it for 10 minutes. The heat destroys the endometrium. This procedure works well for women with an irregular uterus shape due to intracavitary lesions or fibroids.

Physical Therapy
Typically, patients who undergo minimally invasive gynecologic surgery can return to normal activities within a few weeks. Oftentimes, patients can begin their physical therapy and recovery program sooner than patients who have had open gynecologic surgery, because their pain is less severe. Patients who have conventional (open) gynecologic surgery, typically, have a 6 week recovery period.
