Forward Air operates one of the largest and most comprehensive networks of surface transportation for deferred air freight. The company provides scheduled surface transportation through an expansive network of nearly 80 terminals located on or near airports in the United States and Canada, including a central sorting facility in Columbus, Ohio, several regional hubs and direct shuttles. Forward Air provides these services as alternatives to air transportation of shipments that must be delivered at a specific time but is relatively less time-sensitive than traditional air freight or when air transportation is not economical. The company experienced rapid growth in revenue from $63.6 million in 1995 to $214.9 million in 2000, a 28 percent compounded annual rate and in operating income from $6.4 million to $37.2 million over the same period, a 42 percent compounded annual rate. Headquartered in Greenville, Tenn., Forward Air is a subsidiary company of the Forward Air Corporation and has a branch located in Newark, N.J.
